That's because we do it in secret, behind closed doors, with only a few people allowed to watch. And it's "humane".

I say bring back the gallows in the town square.

And the whipping post.

Pain is nature's way of telling you "Hey buddy, you f*cked up." I propose we take advantage of that fact.

Do you really think someone who gets a whipping for DUI (or whatever) isn't going to think twice about doing it again? Would execution as a painful, public spectacle fail to deter would-be killers?

There's your deterrent. And rehabilitation. All rolled into one.

A few years ago, I was on a jury for a home invasion double execution case, actually it was almost a triple execution, but the son lived. DNA, confession, stolen property in the perp's possession. Broke in to former neighbors in the middle of the night, tied them up robbed, beat, and then raped the husband and wife while 12 year old son had to watch. Put plastic bags over the head and duct tape around their necks, Dad starts kicking like crazy, they shoot all three in the head. Split cases for the two defendants, his lawyer blames the other perp for pushing our young (19) defendant into doing it. Says he was Captain of his Basketball team (guess the race), only charged with "minor" stuff in the past, etc. Here in Cali, we barely convicted him and hung on the capital punishment. It was sickening and jurors were saying "he's so young", he had a bad childhood, bs, bs, bs. I was the jury foreman and I feel I let down the victims cause best we could get was life without parole. Me, I didn't give a ratsa$$ about his childhood, or any of that stuff, all I cared about was did we have the right guy, nothing else should matter.

If your ever charged with a crime, go for a jury trial. There are lots of stupid people out there on juries, especially in Cali.

I sometimes waver away from execution, thinking that we are barbaric for doing it. Then I read about some **shole, like the guy who made #999 on the list; he murdered his mother-in-law and 5-year old stepdaughter to cover up another crime. My wavering stops real fast.

Be glad he is not out in 12 1/2 years - at 31 years of age. Sick.

There is a reason I could never be a police officer.
I would be the judge and jury in a case like the one described above.
That SOB would FEEL every ounce of pain as he was administered his "sentence".

Hugh, I couldn't agree more about stupid people on juries. Hell, I even insisted on being removed from the list of registered voters. One reason being that I think Oregon's vote by mail system produces fraudulent elections. But also, because you must be a registered voter to serve on an Oregon criminal trial. Must be something civil that's big coming up in this county...I just got a Jury duty notice. Length of time? Dec. 5th until Feb. 3. Count me among the stupid. I cannot figure out how to get out of this....Hmmm, just had an idea! I wonder what the sentence is for refusing to answer a jury summons? Maybe less than the nearly 2 months I was just sentenced to? Oh, but if I was in jail, I wouldn't be "paid" the $10 per day and 12 cents per mile that is offered.

Who says killing those that have it coming is uncivilized? What better way to be a humanitarian than to put someone out of his/her misery and/or defend the weak that were/will be his victims. Problem is, it takes balls to do the deed.

It's not about money. It's not about deterrent (although that would be nice). It's about good vs evil and punishment for crimes commited. Gotta get your hands dirty sometimes Supe to make things right.

I would have no problem putting Hugh R's criminal's to sleep.

Wayne, you might want to delete or modify this post.

Should you in the future have to defend your wife or family to someone trying to rape, rob or murder them, some dick lawyer might find this and say that you were just "gunning to kill someone" and it would not look good.

Just a hint, things like this do not look good in court.

Hugh, I would have a problem with your situation. The kid was guilty and I could care less how old he was, he killed and has no morals. Only possible good thing is that he could be someones beoytch in prison.

GatoTom, glad that its behind you. Keep facing into the wind and moving forwards, it does all happen for a reason.

Thanks for the hint, Joe. I understand what you mean. I'll leave it as it stands, though. I have no reservation about my feelings. If the crime ever happens, it really won't matter how it turns out.
