A bud sent this to me... I was not prepared for how good these guys sound doing this music (Abbey Road, side two). Will Lee's project The Fab Faux. Lee is the bassist in Paul Shaffer's band on Letterman. Listen to at least 4-5 minutes and be amazed...

from The Fab Faux on Vimeo.

It is well done but still a pale version of the original - which is a masterpiece.

Here is the real thing. The sounds sucks & even drops out at one point but the performance is inspired.

Ian, first of all, let me say that I bow to the level of expertise and professional "ear" that I'm sure you have, being the sound guy here... I'm sure I have no idea what you can hear that I can't even begin to distinguish.

I think that Fab Faux video is much, much better than well done and would never refer to it as "a pale version of the original." I would reserve that kind of branding for a standard/casual effort by a half-decent bar band. These guys are vastly beyond that. In my opinion.

What am I missing? I think they got a huge majority of the timing, changes, voice intonations, tone, etc. spot on. Or 95-98% of the way there. While completely capturing the soul of the original.

Is your standard that it must be indistinguishable from the original studio master?

You used the phrase "the real thing" in your post re: the Marley vid. If you are one of those who believe tribute bands are a blight on the face of the music horizon, I understand some people can be passionate about that. Just curious.

I will see your Marley and raise you a Big Mama Thornton.

John: No, i try not to be that fussy. To me some music should NOT be covered because it is indelibly stamped by the time & place & artist. Abbey Road is one of those imho.

Here is a cover that stands up - although the video is rather bizarre . . .

So, in what way did the Fab Faux performance fall short? Short enough that you referred to it as a pale imitation?

Back to my "what did I miss?" question.

The Fab Faux is not the Fab Four. There has always been a market for imitation in musical performing art. An imitator, impersonator, tribute band - they are all the same. Maybe good at what they do - as in your posted video - but that doesn't change what they are. When I want the Beatles, I want the Beatles. Not The Jersey Beats Sings The Friggin’ Beatles (which is what my mother bought as one of our presents for Christmas ~1964 – we had asked for a Beatles record - true story btw).

But enough jibber-jabber, this is a video thread:

I like some covers but not ones that try to sound exactly like the original. You might as well listen to the original if thats what you wanna hear. For example i hate bruce springstein but i think this song is fantastic

Okay, you haven't answered my question about what specific differences you hear in the performance...

But I see what the problem is:

A severely traumatic incident from your childhood that you haven't gotten over.

Thank you, Dr John. Now I know the root of all my problems.
