Yeah, there's trouble. The oil thing, the capturing of manufacturing by low-wage countries, yadda yadda. We're wringing our hands with a frightened look on our faces. The thing I'm wondering is whether we've forgotten what it means to be America.
We're the innovators. Sure, we're dependent on oil right now but do we need to stay dependent? As I've said before, I'm hoping for a President who will throw down the gauntlet and challenge this nation to become energy independent. It certainly won't be this current "president," but when we get an actual leader, energy independence will be a brilliant and responsible challenge. I'm not tolerant of whiners. Sure, there are technological hurdles to clear. Isn't that how we have fun here? Fission Fusion Battery Technology Solar Wind Anybody who thinks we cannot solve this problem, apparently thinks less of America than I do.

To get through the coming crisis, some future president is going to have to utter the "N" word, "Nuclear". There is an interesting article in the current issue of Scientific American about new nuclear technologies that will enable us to use over 99% of the fuel, and the waste will have a half-life of 100s of years instead 10,000s. With this technology, the fuel supply will last "indefinately", as the article says. I wish they would have defined "indefinately", but it will be 1000s of years, anyway.
Nuclear power plants can produce hydrogen for our cars, too. The optimist in me sees large oil companies taking over this technology smoothly, so they can make huge profits while preserving our economy so that they will have customers. I wonder how fast my 911E will go on hydrogen. I've also heard experts predict that China will bypas the oil economy and go right into the nuclear/hydrogen economy. They probably won't have a choice. If I were advising the Graduate, Benjamin, today, I'd say, "One word son, Nuclear."

Well, China has the benefit of not needing to bother with elections or those various and nettlesome constitutional hurdles we have about petitioning the gov't. for a redress of grievances or not being denied life, liberty or property without due process.
