Watch collectors

I have an interest in mechanical watches and was wondering if they appeal to other pelican members. There have been so many great innovations lately, most I can't afford, but I really appriecate the craftsmanship in the delicate movements. For instance Tag Heuer is coming out with a belt driven mechanism!

I have an Omega Speedmaster and a couple of Oris watches. I'd love to hear what other people have in their collections.

there are lots of watch fans. Some have extensive collections and some like me and you can't afford a bunch.

I have a Swiss Glycine Airman 24hour watch.
This, I switch back and forth between a brown strap and a black strap, and I have the purist model which only shows 2 time zones, but is purely a 24 hour watch.

no picture of it, but i used to have a gold bulova accutron from 1970 that used a condenser coil. it was right about the time that quartz movement arrived..they didn't last long. they had an internal tuning fork, which you could hear as a high-pitched whine when you put it close to your ear. unfortunately, it was stolen just before xmas this past year when thieves broke into my house and cleaned me out.

that sucks. I'd like to get into vintage watches but knowing where to buy so you don't get screwed by people selling fakes and knowing what to pay isn't easy. Besides, my wallet has a hard time keeping up with my taste.

Steve my dad had a Glycine that looked similar to that. He got it from my mom when they got married in 1968. He was so attached to that watch, but about 7 yrs. ago he gave up on it. It was costing him $200 a year in maint. Is yours a new one and does it have a sapphire crystal?

this is a good site to with more detail and historical data.
http://www.glycineairman.info/

It's about 1.5 years old and does have a sapphire crystal. There are several cool models out. The Airman 8 which is the model I have is probably about the closest to the old 60's models. There's another model out that is a limited prod model called the Vintage V that's really close as well, there are still some of those available.

The Vintage V

The Vintage and the 8 are both 36 mm, there's also a 40mm called the Airman 2000, a couple of 42mm, and a 46mm

The Airman Special

The come with several different dial colors too. The Airman 8 that I have was $925 from www.falconwatch.com. The guy at Falcon Watch is the guy to buy from in the states. He's been a Glycine seller since the 60's or maybe 50's.
Check out www.glycine-watch.ch

You can also often find vintage Airmen from the 50's and 60's, but be careful there are some fakes running around on E-bay. There's a forum for them at http://www.watchuseek.com/forums.htm

Very cool. I fear buying another nice watch will push me over the edge, much like Surefire flashlights and SIG pistols have done to me.

I have a number of interesting, to me, Casio G-Shock Atomic Solar watches, the nearest thing to a perpetual motion machine. They recharge via solar collection, and set themselves in the middle of the night via the national time signal out of Fort Collin, CO.

My one GOOD watch is a Breitling Chronomat Vitesse.

Looks good, but not nearly as accurate as any of my significantly more cost effective G-shocks.

I like the look of the Vintage V model, which looks similar to your watch masraum.

I am looking to buy a watch in the next few weeks. My budget is 350, are there any nice watches out there that I can get? I am looking at www.nixonnow.com. A little under my budget but I seem to like them a lot? Any suggestions?

I was originally going to get a pre-TAG, but didn't feel like I knew enough about vintage watches to buy something as my first and daily watch.

Of course, your response is worthless without pics.

Breguet fine watches since 1775. They make some really fine pieces. Particularly cool are those with the tourbillon in the movement.

somewhere..in storage..i have a collection of digital watches from the very first available from sears, circa 1975 in l.e.d. form (5 function if i recall..think i paid $19.99 for it) and an evolution from there up unto about 1990. i need to dig them out..there's got to be at least 15 or more.
