Pellet Guns?

Anybody know of a decent pellet gun (rifle type) I can get for relatively cheap? The slingshot just doesn't piss the varmits off bad enough to keep them out of the tomatoes.

Im looking for .22 cal, pump powered, and something I could pick up at a walmart or sports authority in PA. Nothing fancy, I just want it to hold up for a while. Any bad brands to stay away from, or good models to get? TIA

When I was younger, the Benjamin or Sheridan .22 pellet guns were the standard for squirrels. They pack a decent punch and are decent quality.

I just paid $199 for a beautiful German single-shot air rifle (.177 cal, I think) that keeps the rabbits at bay in my backyard... I spent a bit more 'cause I figure I'll have it for decades (and it is fun for target practice).

Wal Mart sells a Gamo Shadow series. It is single pump, breakdown. It fires at 1000 feet per second. Thats close to a 22 rifle. The drawback is that it's only 177 cal.

The shadow 1000 cost around 150 bucks without the scope, Cabellas has them also.

Most of the multi pump guns only fire around 600-750 fps.
co2 is down around 500 or so

RWS and Walther, both German companies, make very nice pellet guns that should satisfy your needs. Put a cheap 4X scope on it and you are in business. You may discover that these manufacturers make air guns for Olympic competition and for hunting small game. They are not like the bb gun you may have has as a child.

I work at a place that was infested with pigeons that perched and you know what pigeons do. I bought a wallyworld crossman pistol. It is something like 500fps 177 and a pump. It is very accurate up to about 30 feet. I'll bet we killed a couple of hundred pigeons before management caught word on it. They threatened to fire anyone caught with a "weapon" on the plant property. We have to sneak it on site now. Only 50 bucks and still as good after 1000 rounds as the day it was new.

Buy a Sheridan .177 pellet rifle, add a cheap red dot sight. A pump .177 . If pumped up it will shoot through as much wood as a .22 short. Beeen there done that, as a kid.

Little birds and critters don't need .300 Win Mag.

way OT... but you 'll be better off doing some good fencing -- it's there 24 / 7 and you aren't. The rabbits will just shift their feeding times to avoid you. A fence will not generate rabbit jambalaya or stew however.

I bought my Daisy Powerline 880 from walmart many moons ago, and since then it has taken its share of squirrels and chipmunks. I picked it up for $40, and it came with a 4X scope. Nothing fancy, but 700fps is plenty fast with pointed pellets for small varmints. Just keep it oiled and it will last a long time. (true for most brands)

I think most of the higher powered pellet guns are .177 not .22. Academy has what looks like a nice single pump for under $200.

I like my Crossman 1377 pump gun. It has an optional stock to convert it to a rifle. They also have a small scope for it. I have piled up the dead rabbits like cord wood with it......got it a pyramid air guns online.

The same gun will shoot "faster" (fps) in a .177 model, because the pellet has less mass. The "power" is the same, wether is has a .177 barrel or a .22 barrel. For furry beasts larger than rats, .22 is better because it pokes a bigger hole. I have a Weirauch HW77, which is a German break barrel, in .22 caliber that I got in England. I upgraded the mainspring to the most powerful I could get my hands on. It will put a .22 clean through a full 2-liter, and well into a yellow-page. I think Beeman sells Weirauchs in the U.S., re-branded, of course.

Here's my solution to varmits...

Neighbors just think some kid is playing with their cap gun but they feed and cycle nicely in my semiauto .22 caliber handgun.

You can’t shoot them all - as said before - they will only adapt. Dogs are the best thing to keep out the varmints. As soon as I got rid of my dog I had congregations of Deer, moles, squirrels and even the dreaded armadillo which will destroy your yard.

Maybe so, but I know there is one raccoon that won't be chewing a hole in my plastic trash dumpster anymore buried in a unmarked grave in an undisclosed location.

Yeah, mine is a RWS Model 34 Carbine .177 Cal.

Very high power (for an air gun) and darn accurate at distance! Not a toy (my 7-year-old can't even cock the thing!).

Crossman 760 Powermaster. I have owned since I was 10--still reliable and dead accurate after all these years--fires both BBs and Pellets.

I picked up a cheap .22 pump pistol with a 8" barrel that is incredibly accurate. Problem being at ten pumps it is almost as powerful as a .22 rifle and in the city it is not very safe to use. I think it is a crossman, I bought it on a whim so I know it wasn't very expensive.

I got a break-action .177 pellet rifle at Walmart a few years back for about $100. Can't recall the brand but it was made in Spain and has a wood stock, rails for a scope and all-metal construction. Single-stroke and single shot, will put a pointed pellet through a 1x pine board at 50 feet. Pump-ups are nice for more power, but they are less convenient and believe me, critters learn to scatter when they hear that pumping sound. The Benjamins are very nicely made and durable -they have a .22 version in stainless steel that sells for about $300, I think. The Beeman and Feinwerkbau single-stroke rifles are among the best, but very pricey. Unless you live in the country, I'd discourage plinking varmints with a real .22 rifle - law enforcement will take a dim view of your 'hobby shooting' and you could be charged with terrorism, or worse yet, an errant round might injure or kill. Air rifle pellets have a fraction of the mass of a .22 round and don't travel very far or carry much momentum.
