I used to have a 22 cal pellet gun. It was a pain in the butt to find pellets for. I'd stick with a really good 177.

You can get a Sheridan Blue Streak for about $150, or the nickle plated Silver Streak for about $10-$15 more. These are in 5mm (.20) caliber and fire a very heavy for caliber pellet. Guns and pellets are available everywhere; it is a very popular rifle, and for good reason. It is the standard by which all other pump-up pellet rifles are measured.

I am somewhat of a gun nut, as most of you have probably gathered. In addition to my centerfire and rimfire guns, I have, and have had, quite a variety of air rifles. Everything from high-end match rifles for 10 meter competition to pre-charged pneumatics for pest shooting. I keep going back to my Sheridan, a 1962 model, that I literally found in a ditch under water when I was a kid. I dried it out, oiled it, and it has been shooting ever since. It will outlive me, and you cannot say that about many air rifles. Best value out there by far.

If you are really into it, you can even get a hot-rodded Sheridan from a company called Mac1 Air Guns. They have a web site; just google "Mac1 air gun". For $240 you can get their "Steroid Sheridan" that gives about half again the stock velocity, producing over double the energy compared to stock. These conversions are very highly respected in the air gun world. The basic, stock Sheridan is as well, for that matter.

Like I said in another thread, those of us that are into air guns, no matter how fancy, still reach for the Sheridan when things get "serious". As "serious" as things ever get with an air rifle, that is. Anyway, here is a picture of mine:

How about CO2 powered guns - you don't have to pump.

Again, tho, you are just creating a vacuum in the population of rabbits or whatever. The neighboring rabbits, etc. will immediately move in to fill the 'hole' (i.e. your garden). Effective control always involves changing the habitat whether by fence, dog, cat, etc.

Let's see: A .177 pellet weighs about 8 grains, goes about 650 fps on average. A .22 round weighs about 40 grains, goes about 1000 fps on average. That's five times the mass going one and a half times the velocity. How far will it fly when it richochets off a rock? Would you be willing to try and catch it? If you're squeezing off pistol rounds in suburbia and thinking that's OK, you gotta check yourself.

I have a .177 Slavia, which is very fast, and real accurate - have even killed a Giunea Fowl with it, though I'm sure that if it weren't a headshot the bird would simply have been amused by the shot!

I was always very jealous of a friend's RWS though, as I have never before seen any pellet gun (and that includes some .22 cals) that packs nearly as much of a punch. It isn't quite as accurate as my Slavia, but whatever you hit stays hit!

If I had a to buy now, I'd buy an RWS without any arguments...

I have a Gano with iron sights. I pissed my wife off by shooting down all of her windchimes in the backyard. I shot the strings from about 50 feet. It is very accurate.

Here's what I use. A break-barrel .177 caliber Gamo 1000 Shadow. It's much nicer than the pump style jobs you can buy at WalMart. It's inexpensive ($150 with scope). 1000fps muzzle velocity, very accurate for a field-use pellet gun, good range, and fair knock-down power.

I have the Beeman Tempest hand pistol. Good bang for the buck and accurate. A point pellet will enclose itself in pine at 20-25yds.
It's not the best but good enough for cheap. The round heads will not penetrate cats or dogs at close range but will bring down a big seagul at 25yds with a head shot... so the rumors say.

Beeman also sells used re-built guns from a neat catalog. Prices are about 50% of retail.

I still have the .22 Crossman my parents gave me when I was 9yrs old, it came with a 4 power scope and it was and still is a tack driver. It has claimed its share of small game. It is a pump up model, .22 pellet only. I think it cost about $29.00 back then, thats been 40 plus yrs.

Acquisition story- I was 11 and we had just moved into a new house and the family was short of cash. Dad picked it up used and gave it to me for Christmas......one of the best presents I ever got.

I still want to try a Steyr LP50 pistol (5 shot repeater), but it's waaaaay down the list of priorities.

To clarify my position plugging the sub sonic .22...I live outside the limits of any city or town, which makes firearm use perfectly legal...it's just that I figure that my 7mm Rem. Mag. Elk rifle might be a bit of overkill on a Raccoon, plus might wake the neighbors...

usually the first line of defense in a garage here in az. is to keep the damn thing uncluttered. dont cram a 1000# of crap in a 5# bag. when pack rats find a cool dark place with water near, plan on having a colony real fast. and then visitors............rattlesnakes! if storing vehicle never leave hood closed, otherwise a huge nest and all your wiring will be chewed up. rattlesnakes smell pack rats urine and feces and then you have some real big problems. not only are pack rats eating the hell out of your worldly possessions, but when you go on the attack, you find a very pissed off rattlesnake somewhere in nest or nearby.

blew a gasket on my roommate who is from chicago. he dumped all his crap off in my outside covered garage 2 months ago after nasty divorce, stating he was going to get a storage place for it. kept after him on this to remove it. well he kept blowing me off. well the other night went out to work on vehicle. look in engine compartment and rat feces and little pecker tracks all over engine. i went ballistic on roommate and told him to move his crap( more than 2 pick up beds full) NOW! or i was going to heave it out into the dezert myself! get to bottom of pile and heres about 3 coffee cans full of mesquite beans piled up. packrats had already started building nest about 20 feet from where i park my p-car.

so bottom line is dont allow any nesting areas, use traps with peanut butter, sight in your pellet rifle................and GET REAL GOOD AT SHOOTING IT! and get a KAT also for rodent control.

dont even want to think what wiring would cost on a p-car!!! YIKES THATS SCARY!
