I'm surprised a CA cop is dumfounded by a fake SS card. That and fake drivers' licenses are very common. The SSN might be from a 6 yo kid that died in 1957 but it's common.

That is from the day when someone cared about identity theft and bogus SS numbers.

Now numbers are just made up. If they were never issued in the first place the IRS cannot be bothered to go after illegals or bother even telling employers. If they are in use - they go after the rightfull registrant for back taxes and filings.

Get this... when an employer in California tries (in fact is required) to check if a SS number is valid, they have an 800 number to call. All the operator is allowed to tell them is IF the number is valid.

Not that the person who has the card is the owner of the account, or if the number belongs to THAT person. Simply that it is a valid number.

Sound like revenue enhancement? It is. No one WANTS to stop the abuse. I can get you any SS number on an official (looking) card in Times Square, or Market Square anywhere in SoCal.

Couple that with the Catholic Church providing shelter to 'recent arrivals' and references on how to get emergency (normal) care at any (tax paid) subsidized ER, and free (tax paid) prenatal care for the soon-to-be-citizen, as well as a list of 'sympathetic candidates' and the bogus requirements in order to vote here in the state for a specified agenda, and you have Mexifornia as it is today. Go to any passport office and there will be a line of strollers waiting (with an ACLU-provided interpreter) to file for a U.S. Passport for the new little citizen. Parents and siblings, even if here illegally, get to stay to care for the little citizen.

The powers that be (voted into office by this farce) have no interest in changing the way things are.

Kinda like some of the other wars raging at the moment. We have lost, and have not realized it yet.

Wrong again, this has nothing to do with hating mexicans, but has everything to do with the fact that there are people sneaking into this country illegally, ignoring our laws and the fact that some people think that it we should bend over back wards to cater to people who disrespect our laws and abuse a system funded by our tax payers!!.

This is one reason right here, plus, as a business owner, if I screwed up the order, because he couldn't read & speak English, it would cost me money, and if he eats something that he is allergic too, who do you think the courts are coming after?? BTW, a friend had an illegal rear end his car 2 months ago. When in Germany, I wouldn't expect everything to be in English for me.

Exactly. My wife is of Mexican heritage. She does not speak Spanish. Her parents refused to teach it to their kids once they moved to the USA. "You're in the US now, you need to speak English." Seemed to be common sense back then. Today? I suppose it would be insensitive or discriminatory or maybe just too much effort!

Amail, your story is not unique to California. Local youth recently killed in a head on here...drunk illegal crossed the centerline. He'll be deported after he gets out of prison....

He could really be legal. I think the laws were changed in the past 5 years for legal immigrants. If you commit a felony, then you can be deported. With his probable education level, he might not know the difference between a felony and a lower level crime.

If only they had a driver's license, it would have never happened...

Glad you were not badly hurt, they probably won't go to jail or get deported

I have lived in San Marcos for nearly 8 years now. Sadly it is a fact that on Friday afternoon, payday, the local markets are flooded with Mexican laborers buying a case of bud. Between Escondido and Vista on the 78 I have encountered many many drunk drivers and witnessed a fatal hit and run involving a drunk driver. This is no small problem. To give credit where due the SMPD/Sheriff has a large presence and do a good job keeping the streets and stores clear of trouble.

Our brilliant legislators in NJ are trying to pass a bill to allow Illegals to have drivers licensee's. WTF?
When we go to the DMV we ( US citizens that where born here) have to bring about 20 forms of I.D., proof of address, urine sample first born, etc, etc.... God forbid you are missing even the slightest bit of info. But an illegal will be able to waltz right in, and have a license handed to them with no problem.

I'm sure many, if not most are made up, but according to friends in the mortgage business (both retail and wholesale) they constantly run into apps with real SSNs that obviously don't match the holder.

I'm just surprised a CA cop is taken aback by an alleged illegal have a card.

Soryy to hear about it, I was in a friends car with the same experience.
Well Bush and some leading democrats were the proponents for pushing through the "amnesty" program. National policy all filters down to the daily street level.
The middle class is now designated obsolete.

What we have are several overlapping/competing issues, and should really be broken into another thread:
  • The guy's doc status is irrelevant to the overall story, but is intended to add a level of drama to the incident. For a different spin, sub 'black guy,' 'redneck,' 'rich white guy' in place of 'illegal'.
  • Businesses want illegals here, because the threat of 'outing' illegals puts downward pressure on wages
  • anectdotal evidence suggests illegals are willing to do crap work, and do it harder/better/faster than the spoiled gringos, which is why businesses want them
  • there has been a cultural identity 'movement' for some time, where it's considered 'selling out' to "Americanize" yourself, so various communities go to great lengths to (what they consider) preserving their identity, when in reality they appear to be ostracizing themselves.
  • Old-school Ellis Island-style immigrants bent over backwards to integrate themselves. They worked their ass off to learn english, or they suffered
  • New-school imigrants bend over backwards to make themselves stand apart, for the sake of 'cultural identity' and demand that the rest of the country adapt to them in terms of language, requiring bizarre accomodations for their culture, etc.
  • I know immigrants who have integrated so well you wouldn't know where they were from - there may even be one on this thread - can you spot him?
  • I also know immigrants who have been here close to 20 years, and don't speak a frickin' word of English.
  • politicians are working both sides: they cater to new-school immigrants hoping to broaden their base (Dems), and cater to businesses who want to maintain the supply of cheap labor (Reps)
  • the 'system' of allowing people into the country needs to be streamlined to a) make it easier for a mutually beneficial relationship; b) justify stiffer punishment for those who come over illegally and employers of same.

Sorry Thom, but you are flat wrong on a number of issues you bring up.

His documentation status does make a difference. A black guy, cracker or whatever has the potential to be driving here in California legally with insurance, with an illegal alien this is not a possibility(Until gil cedillo pushed his bill through finally, which will be terminated by Ahnold) It is irresponsible to say that it would make it "safer" to give illegal aliens driver's licenses, the idea does not even make sense if you ponder it for even a moment.

Sadly yes, some businesses are willing to flout the law, there are criminals of all stripes.

Anectdotal evidence is BS and not truly evidence of anything, more what the author "feels" is happening.

The only point you made that was something I would agree with is the last one, but that does nothing to address the existing problem with 12 million people here illegally.

Well said. Having thought about this a bit more I've realized that the illegal status that bothers me is his lack of license and insurance. The legality of his residency is irrelevant.

For the record, I do get sick and tired of seeing illegal aliens reaping the benefits of our system. On the other hand, I have a lot of respect for the guys that are out there working their butts off trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. It would be much better if gaining legal status were made a quicker (not easier) process.

So if he was legal, he would say "Lo siento, Señor Cuervo, but I have a green card now, and we must part ways. Adios, mi amigo"?

Personally, if I was in a country illegally, I would do everything I could to stay off the radar: I'd learn the language, stay out of sight as much as possible, and I would't do anything to piss of the locals, particulaly the fuzz.

dmoolenaar - You'd recognize the location. Westbound 78 on the Nordahl exit.

I went to the tow yard yesterday to retrieve the phone charger I left in there. I took some photos to show how well the car stood up to the hit.

Unfortunately they would not let me see the other car. I glanced around but couldn't find it.
