Jake, I'm going to go to the local DMV office and get "official" clarification on this. It doesn't make sense that you can register a brand new replica car with a "hobby/antique" tag, but unless the car is 25+ years old, or registered as such, that it has to pass emissions. Here's what the DMV site says:
"Custom cars built in Georgia that are less than 25 years old follow the same registration, title, and tag procedures as a regular passenger vehicle. You will need a valid Georgia driver's license, proof of insurance, and the appropriate fees and taxes. Georgia charges an $18 title fee and a $20 registration fee. Tag costs and taxes will vary by county. No title or certificate will be issued to any car unless it meets the emissions standards adopted by the state. Your vehicle will need to be inspected prior to being registered". Hobby and antique vehicles over 25 years old (or vehicles manufactured to resemble such vehicles) are eligible for a special license plate through the state of Georgia. These cars do not require any special permits to operate on the state's roadways, as long as they display a valid tag". Gotta love those public servants...NOT!

No inspection needed for me.. I took the MSO for the vehicle to the courthouse along with the bill of sale and proof of insurance and was out in 10 minutes with a tag...
As listed on the registration: 1955 kitcar-spyder 550 The closer I look the more I don't see the 2005 mentioned in the title description the way it was explained to me the day I got the tag... That may help :-) Buy this thing, I need to buy a motorhome and trailer for our 2007 SCCA season :-)

Trust me, I'm working on it...I'd definitely give it a good home.
Since it says "1955" in the registration, that may solve the emissions problem!

Yep and I didn't realize that till I dug out the registration.. I was in a hurry the day I registered it, plus everything here in the mountains is so non complicated compared to the city..
We should talk, email me at productdevelopment@aircooledtechnology.com I'll consider an offer on the car- I need to get ready for next season and I have no place to store the 550 over the winter.

Jack, I live in Fulton County. FWIW, my Vintage 550 came titled as a "1955 Porsche." Don't know how the PO managed that, but that's what he had. I took that to the tag office and though they didn't have anything on the computer that went back to 1955, they gave me a Antique/Hobby plate with no problem. Didn't even want to go outside and look a the car.
Buy that car! I had a Raby motor in mine and loved it!

I've been insured with State Farm since 1969 - and worked for them in the auto claims dept. for 33 years before I retired in '04. They have insured a bunch of collector cars for me over the years. However, they may have a problem with what they will consider a "kit car" (even though a Beck isn't really a kit), since it probably isn't listed in their rating book. There was a time when they would insure almost anything on wheels, but the current version of State Farm isn't quite like it used to be.
I'm not adverse to going through Hagerty or another specialty carrier if I have to, but I'd like to stay with SF it at all possible. I've been wanting a Beck 550 for years. Meeting Mr. Beck and then seeing Jake's car about 100 yards away really messed me up. Anyone in the market for a perfect, never smoked in, garaged, low mileage (under 500) 6-speed 2006 GTO?

We've been with State Farm for over 20 years. All the cars, homes, rentals etc. Our agent nearly fell off the chair laughing when we tried to get insurance for the spyder....
It is the choice of the individual agent. He chose NO. Our car is insured through Motorsports Insurance in CA. No mileage restrictions. Our car is titled as a 1955 Porsche Spyder Replica based on its MSO. Each state varies, but in Oregon, if you understand the vehicle registration laws, you can get the car registered as such. The car is eligible to use and has permanent antique plates (1955) complete with the 1955 date tag. With its 1955 registration it is missions exempt. Though I'd bet it will pass any pipe test. angela

I have had much better luck with my fleet of cars getting insured through Hagerty than any other provider. They understand the collector car much better than other companies and base their business on it, while others think old cars are just a thorn in their side...
Jack, come drive the car and I'm damn sure you'll buy it..wave some cash in front of my eyes and lets talk!

Jake,
Well, the 1955 registration is a good thing, and I'm not concerned about getting it insured. Just gotta get the funds together, and I am working on that. I am 99% finished with a year long '61 Impala bubbletop project, and am waiting on the final bill from the shop that did the (bare metal) paint and body work. Hopefully I'll have enough left over so I can make both of us happy!

The car won't be around forever.. I am taking it to Euro fest in a couple of weeks to be put in the for sale corral there and have two guys coming from out of state to see it already, unless it sales before the event.. :-)

K9,
I'd love to take the car to roebling, but whats more important is getting our F production 914 ready for it's first season in SCCA.. Plus, I'll kill myself in the Spyder, the car is too fast for me to drive very long, as soon as I get used to the power I'll start doing stupid stuff like I did as a kid, on dirt bikes..

Jake,
I saw you there the last time I was on the track you had the red 914 that day, but I did not get a chance to talk to you, I saw you later when I went to lunch over by the leader board looking at results and meant to stop by. Roebling is great for me only about 45 minutes away its just getting the time off these days are hard, we are short handed until we get some guys out of the academy and through FTO training and the traffic on I-95 just never let's up. I am racking up between 30 and 40 hours overtime every two weeks it is getting old quick. Can you make it down to the Porsche Cup race at Daytona in a couple of weeks, I will be doing Tech inspections there ? I will post a flyer. Todd
