Got a couple more small things done today, added new KYB shocks to rear to replace Brazilian POS shocks that came on car, waiting on new fronts to come in.

Also added Nardi Clasico steering wheel to replace POS red leather Brazilian one,

Wires are a mess under dash as I am working on Speedo and Temp gage, will clean up and hide them when finished.

Getting there slowly but surely,,,

I looked at getting one of these and putting a Raby mill in it. In reading the California vehicle code, I had serious reservations about getting it registered for the road, unless it would pass 2006 emmissions. You might get it to pass, but would have to put fuel injection on it, which is not such a bad thing. I went and got a smog exempt car so I would not have to worry about it.

It will happen when I retire and move back to Texas, or up to Lake Tahoe and can register it somewhere other than here. Maybe when the Mexicans take over Kalifornia they will ditch the smog laws.

I was fortunate to meet Chuck Beck at the Petit LeMans last weekend. Chuck is a very nice fellow, and patiently answered several dumb questions that I asked, as I would LOVE to have a Beck Spyder to play with.

Chuck and his local associate (McMichael Motorsports) had two Beck Spyders on display, along with several other replicars. Chuck let me sit in his personal Spyder, which was tested by Motor Trend magazine in 2002. I'm a big guy, and it fit me just fine. Not the easiest car to get in and out of, but no worse than the '62 Corvette I recently sold.

IMO, the problem with these cars is that they have gotten VERY pricey in the past few years. The turn-key versions on display were $27.9K (130 HP) and $29.9K (160 HP + a close-ratio transaxle). Lots of desirable "real" Porsche choices for that money!

Mine was sitting in the Porsche corral with a 35,500.00 price tag on it...With 190 ponies of TIV power it costs a tad more but goes a lot farther!

I saw it, Jake...an INCREDIBLE Spyder for sure. I'm looking at the flier I 'borrowed' from the front seat of yours. It is definitely worth the extra $5500 over a stock optionless 160 HP Beck. Let's see, if I sold my 993....

I love the idea of the 914/Type IV engine in one of these. That definitely does away with the VW Syndrome that unfortunately accompanies most of these cars.

Thanks.. I have also done a TON of other upgrades to the car, all mechanical of course..

I have had dozens of interested parties, but none of them can dig up the money..

Jake,

Just curious...is your car registered as a '55 "Porsche 550" or a 2005 Beck Spyder? I'm wondering if it is the latter, will it be subject to GA emissions testing? Unfortunately, I live in one of the Metro Atlanta counties (Cobb) that require testing, dammit.

Doesnt Angela have a 3.2 six cylinder engine in hers? Bet that it really flies, especially with a lady in the car. Low weight and lots of power would make for a fun ride!

Believe that LeeH here in Phoenix had one for a while then sold it, but it would be nice here in Arizona.

A six in these cars makes for a pretty zesty ride. Numerous power plants find their way into these cars. The most common is a Type 1, or Type IV. If you are going Type IV, buy a Raby engine. I've gone on tour with a couple of guys with the Raby Type IV - they are good solid powerful engine with a deep gutsy exhaust sounds.

Lot of other engine options. The six is one (and if you love 911's its probably the one for you) but does offer some fitment issues whereas the air cooled fours are bolt-in easy.

Also a number of subaru powered ones. Imagine a WRX-STI engine in this car! I know its a water pumper, but it fits in pretty easily even with the radiator. Goes like stink. There are also people using Alpha flat four, rotary, and one crazier than I fellow who has crammed a northstar v8 into his.

Our car is not a Beck, its a Thunder Ranch. The Thunder Ranch offers the six as a kit or partially assembled all the way to turn-key. This maker also offers a wider body that allows 225 tires to fit under the shell.

Angela pretty much summed it up on these car's, I will add two things,

(1) As to the cost, yes they are expensive you pretty much have to " want " one to spend the money on it, there are alot of other P-Car's out there to be had for the same money, I had always been interested in them so I decided to try a build to do something different, I still have my 911's they are my first love.

(2) As to the exhaust sounding like a VW , I have a " Vintage " exhaust on my car that I purchased from Greg Leach at Vintage Spyders one of the US builders of these cars , it does not really sound like a traditional VW , not sure what it really sounds like but I like it....lol

Todd

PS... as a side note these cars are definately not a " daily " driver

Well, I'm getting too old for my ancient Triumph Bonneville, not to mention the traffic around here which is not at all motorcycle-friendly. So a Beck Spyder seems to be a good replacement for the bike for me.

I used to have a Formcar Formula Vee, and the Spyder would be almost like one of those that you could legally drive on the street. With four times the power. Yikes!

Yep...
Here is a video of mine being driven somewhat leisurely with a couple of "pedal stabs" to near redline..

The Type 4 has great manners until you want raw power-then hold on..

Jake,

Unfortunately I don't have a MP4 player on my computer, but I can imagine that 184 HP in a 1300 lb. car must be VERY entertaining!

How is your Spyder registered, and is it emissions exempt in GA? If you wouldn't mind, I might drive up to your shop one day to take a closer look. When I saw the car at Road Atlanta, the engine wasn't visible. It was definitely the nicest Beck I've ever seen in person.

There are a ton of pics on my site of the engine. Look here. www.aircooledtechnology.com/galleries/spyder

My Spyder is registered as a 2005 Porsche replica. I got the tag in 10 minutes, no emissions needed, no inspection needed, but I do live in the country and we don't have any BS to conform to in those regards..

I might be able to drive the Spyder to work one day soon if you want to come see it in person, but while i am here there isn't much time for anything but engine related work!

Wow, great pics. That shows me what I wanted to see.

I checked the GA DMV site, and it appears the Spyder is subject to emissions testing in my county since it is registered as a 2005 model. Only 25+year old cars are exempt in Metro Atlanta, even Special Construction. Oh, well...one more reason to move to the mountains!

Yep, or at least buy an acre of land here..

It might just pass the smog checks- I have had engines very similar to this pass in California!
