It would be nice if they'd learn to drive better though. 9 times out of 10 if I see someone pulling one of the typical a$$hat moves that predominates the driving habits of motorists in the PNW they'll still have a faded, tatered Kerry sticker plastered on their rear window so that it perfectly blocks their rearward vision. Naturally I'm excluding all present pinko liberal cry-babies. I know Sup could kick my butt on the AX course...but then again I could just sit on him.

Here's a pic of homes along the Oregon Coast taken a few days ago...a ritzy area called Gleneden beach. To see more of the recent weather damage, click here and surf around a bit:
http://www.oregonlive.com/ Whoops...couldn't save and download the pic. Click on "coastal flooding" under the pics column to view a slide show. Politics here are far left, so if you move to Oregon, be sure to be willing to attach a mileage measuring (sure...they say that's all it will do) GPS unit to your car. The pilot program is already in place for doing this to every car in the state. The recent election just re-elected those who support this....and all three branches of Oregon government are controlled by partisan Democrats. The day Oregon tells me that I have to install one of these on my Porsche is the day I pull the plates and sell the car. Either that, or I'll move to either Idaho or Nevada.

Quite frankly Paul, I have a hard time imagining anyone, liberal or conservative, that would comply with this regulation. I can tell you with certainty that they'd have a hard time getting one on my car, and that they'd be busy tracking down the other two million balkers here.

Hard to imagine. I mean, I believe you Paul, but can't imagine folks lining up for subdermal obedience implants. Lots of old cars out there. Lots of folks out there like you and me that would NOT do this. I've got gas cans. In Washington State, we get to pump our own gas. Nobody is there to do license plate inspections.
I see no reason for this, if the purpose is to apply a "use" tax. That is accomplished with a plain ol' gas tax. Oh, and it would be the conservatives doing this. Not the liberals. You say Oregon is liberal and many folks there are, but I noticed a fairly hellacious debate followed by the passing of some anti-gay voter measures. It's probably just another provision in the so-called "Patriot Act."

And back to our regular scheduled topic....
If you move to Washington, you have to deal with Supe. If you move to Oregon, you have to deal with Paul. They are both nice guys, so it really doesn't matter either way.

volcano's, tsunami's, earthquake's, rain, flooding, dreary fall-winter-spring, liberals, homicidal coffee-amped soccer mom's in SUV's, horrible traffic, Sonics ........... you are better off looking elsewhere.

The PNW is a great place to live. Come visit in the Winter and you will most likely not like it. Come in the Summer and you will likely fall in love.

Sign up for the GPS units or no license tags issued for your car...just like smog checks in Portland. Pretty simple for them to do, really. You betcher lefty ass they would. Anti gay voter measures??? HUH??? You mean the simple message that "marriage" is defined as being between a man and a woman? The constitutional measure passed by initiative? Far as I know, gays vote here...so do illegal aliens. The mail ballot, remember? Would be conservatives? Gimme a break....the power structure of this state is liberal democrat...pure and simple. Speaker of the house, president of the senate, and the governor...all liberal democrats. The State supreme court is composed of liberal democrats. Conservatives are a small minority here....they are scattered in rural Oregon, but they must all dance to the political tune played by metro areas of Portland, Salem, and Eugene, liberal towns all. Super, I've lived in Oregon longer than you've been breathing...like I said, gimme a break.

I don't know if that measure is the one I became hazily aware of, but the folks I was referring to are the ones in Eugene. Or at least....Lane County. You'd think that liberals outnumber conservatives there 5:1, but not so. And if this is not the case in Eugene, then it is not the case in Oregon.
If you look up "naive" in the dictionary, you'll probably see my picture. Sort of. I'd have to assert I'm a tad bit informed but yeah, I do come across as fairly pollyanna. Nevertheless, I honestly believe this will be a difficult or impossible system to administer and enforce. And I would be happy to stand with you in its opposition. I would oppose almost any system that would reduce my liberty. And finally, I wish folks would not be so hasty as to assume this kind of schit comes from liberals. Yes, liberals do like to see important government programs funded. But liberals are not NEARLY as comfortable giving away liberties as conservatives appear to be.

Come on guys. The thread starter wanted to get information about living in the PNW, not a debate on liberal/conservative policies regarding a sensor on your car that equates to a house arrest device. Although interesting, don't you think it should be discussed in its own thread?

Don't forget in OR that if you flash your lights (as in "I want to pass you") it is considered aggressive driving, and the other driver can report you and IIRC you actually may have to pay a fine.
Happy Troy?

So did Doug & Julie move to the PNW after all? I knew they were looking at it but hadn't heard they did it.

First let me say I grew up and lived in Seattle for 30+ years so Don't let the address fool you.
If you want to move some where and have fun driving a toy I wouldn't pick the NW. The weather doesn't cooperate very often. But, most importanly the Highway patrol and local cops in both Oregon and Washington are brutal and not very forgiving!

YAHBO, can you move anywhere? Or do you need to be in a particular kind of place for work?
If I could move anywhere, in my global top five places would be central California coast - from Monterey to San Luis Obipso to Santa Barbara. Check it out - ask if you want to know more.
