I've been watching MSNBC the past week or so since the elections, and, frankly, I don't know how anybody can watch this stuff all the time without getting nauseous. There is so much overkill on these 24 hr cable "news" stations--about 10% facts and 90% opinion--TV "journalism" at its worst.
First the Democrats have to act "immediately" on Iraq. Never mind the election results don't take effect until Jan 1. Next, there is this House no.2 "race", which msn.com now says is a "lose-lose" for Pelosi. ??? What a bunch of crap--in Murtha's now famous words, which have been hyped out of proportion on MSNBC and those other hype-news networks. The mediots are part of the problem...Obermann take note.

I spent some "quality time" with the ENTIRE Murtha video last night. It's like 18 minutes long I think. After some chit chat about real estate and the price of hotels in Washington DC, Murtha makes a strong pitch to get these guys to invest in his home district, to invest in some ailing coal companies so they don't go out of business before new regs will again make them profitable.
He pushes this agenda, and pushes it hard, for the remaining part of the tape. He also tell them over and over that they don't need his help to get their friend in the country. He says this repeatedly, clearly inferring that he has nothing to "sell" them, since they can do it themselves. Then he goes back to get their big bucks "client" to invest in his district. The guy is relentless in seeking to help the coal businesses in his district. The final 6 or 7 seconds of the tape is him saying he won't take the money, and adds "not now." I think it is clear that he is only trying to keep them at the table to do what he pushes them to do for 99.99% f the substantive discussion -- invest in his district. Four guys took the money. He's the only one that turned it down.

Why'd you leave the part out where he follows "not now" with "maybe later, maybe after we've done business for a while" etc.?

Because I didn't hear it.
There's three vids on youtube, two in the 7 minute range, and one that's a few seconds. The last one is the bribe effort, and he does not say what you report.

AMOROSO: Let me ask you now we're here together. I was under the impression, okay, and I told Howard we were willing to pay. And, okay, [opens the drawer and shows money] I went out and got the fifty thousand. From what you're telling me, you're telling me that's not what, you know, that that's not what you...
MURTHA: I'm not interested. AMOROSO: Okay. MURTHA: At this point. AMOROSO: Okay. MURTHA: You know, we do business for a while, maybe I'll be interested, maybe I won't, you know. I've highlighted the parts in case you are as hard of reading as hard of hearing. That's not exactly an indignant refusal of the money, now is it? It's a crafty way of leaving it on the table until you have developed a high enough level of trust in the briber to take the money. No one ever said Murtha was stupid. Just corrupt. |

I don't know and neither do you. The phrase "after we've done business for a while," in the context of the tape, means to me "invest in my district and we'll talk again." Let's do the business I want and we'll then talk about the business you want. It's a polite way of saying no while trying to get them to say yes to his proposal. Again, he kept saying over and over that he could not help them, that they did not need his help. Not the words of someone looking for a bribe. BTW, I'm taking your word for the quote, none of that is on any tape available on youtube.

There are portions of the tape missing as I've seen other clips that aren't in there. For instance there is a part when Murtha discusses how he'd like him to invest in specific businesses within his district because [something like] although he (Murtha) doesn't have a direct interest in the companies, their success would help him greatly. This was a different part fom the coal investment discussion.

I've decided not to engage you any further. You're not the kind of person I chose to talk to. I'm sure there are discussions where everyone agrees with every bonehead idea in your head.

The Bush crowd attracts a lot of thugs ... mean, unpleasant people that can't participate except to cheerlead their side or attack the other. You're one of them.
