The Getaway is a great movie. Tivod when I saw it was playin.

Bullit was Directed by Peter Yates not Peckinpah.

What U bin smokin boy...What seven or eight speed trans...the Mustang had a 4 spd toploader and the Charger...was either a 4 spd or Automatic..

The Mustang had a built 390 and the Charger by the way it took corners was probably a 383.

The problem with a 440 is that they DON"T corner..they plough ahead...even the best of drivers would have problems unless the Chassis was heavily modified. A 426 Hemi...yep lets see them blow that one up..

The Ford 390 was a DOG....laughed at in its day, thats why Ford started putting 428 CJs in them midyear 68. A 68 1/2 Mustang GT with 428 CJ sold at Barret Jackson for 475K in Jan 06...I think 200 of them were built.

Yep he is "double de clutching" which is basicaly sticking the the box in neutral betwean changes, whilst letting the clutch in, then de pressing the clutch and selecting a higher gear. Supposed to put less stress on older style gear boxes. The actual engine soundtrack used was a Ford GT40 so the technique was most probably highly desirable when using the race gearbox.

What hasn't been mentioned concerning "Bullit" is Lalo Schifrin's music. Next time you guys watch the movie, play close attention to the soundtrack: it's like a second point of view to the movie; it works that well with the action, particularly the build up to the chase scene.

According to Schifrin, the reason no music accompanied the chase scene is because he thought the Mustang and Charger engines was music enough.

It's really an excellent movie because of what ISN'T said, particularly about a cop who's about to crack. Minimal dialogue, lots of dry language - brilliant.

Also, what everyone seems to forget in place of the chase scene is the ending with McQueen and the antagonist running around, dodging passenger jets on the SFO runways.

BTW: I thought the "double-clutching" was McQueen hitting the Mustang's rev limiter.

Hmmm...that's interesting. So to do this:

1) Press in clutch.
2) Go to neutral.
3) Let out clutch.
4) Press in clutch.
5) Go to higher gear.

Will that extend the life of my 915 gearbox?

Double clutching was THE way to shift during the days of the "crash box" transmission. You see kids, there was a time before the synchromesh transmission, when shifting was accomplished by going to neutral, letting out the clutch, then using engine speed to help the gears mesh, thus no grinding as you shifted up or down. Knowing how to double clutch was a useful skill...easily picked up if your learning to drive vehicles were non synchromesh cars, like mine were. Those who complain of the 915's shifting should have tried a Ford F-1 pickup with a flathead V-8 and a crash box...

It really shouldn't be necessary but if the box is a bit tired and worn or just plain awkward try it and see how it feels.

I was being sarcastic. Sounds great, but both cars are constantly upshifting. I think it's funny, he blips the throttle on every shift. makes it so much more dramatic.

I love that movie, (Bullit), Notice in the very beginning of the chase when McQueen in the Mustang gets cut off by gridlocked traffic that will not allow him to turn left as the Charger gets a jump on him. Does he swear at the cabbie? Does he exhibit even a hint of "road rage"? Does he even look like his heart is beating fast? Hell, no! He's Steve McQueen, the absolute master of existential cool. Like a great handball player, he stands still and makes others move around him. Such a sublime actor, hardly anyone can pull off that minimalism w/o just being wooden and boring.

A few years ago, there was a Vanity Fair-type article about Ali I heard about (never read), that described her as "destitute" and living in Santa Fe.
