The must sell is by year end so it might make sense. These guys have to finance the lot... taking a loan over year end might imply some financial penalties.
Also the price is credible as it might be the what they paid for a trade in on a new Lexus. So they got their sale on the new car (for bonus purpuses), forced to take in a decent car at a good price and now they are trying ot unload the 993 without a loss quickly. Still it has 110k miles. It's not such a steal as you might think. 60-70kmiles 993s go from $26k to $35 depending on the year. Check it out. Ask if they would offer a warranty. It's a lot of car for that money. |

Carbon build up and the consequent check engine light.
But it happens at 60-70k miles. At 110k you should be good on that. Usually these deals are snapped up by the employees directly (it's a way for the dealership to reward some of their workers) and then they make it to the mkt at a decent price a couple of weeks later. Here it could be that the car really came in 2 days ago and everybody was maxxed out for Xmas and nobody could put up the $25k in cash. I don't know... It would be interesting to see if ythey put the price back up if it doesn't sell by 12/30 |

A dealership NEVER has a trade in that it "must sell."
They don't even retail sell most of the trade ins they take. The majority of trade-ins they take are sold to wholesalers who take anything. So if they wanted that car gone today, it's just a phone call in the morning and it's gone by the afternoon. But whatever the ad says, doesn't really matter. This is likely a car with no mechanical record, and no real history on it. So like most cars, it's all about condition and the PPI. In addition to a mechanical PPI, I'd have a thorough body check done, too. I wouldn't be surprised if the car has had accident damage. Which may be ok, you just need to be fully aware of the condition. Price seems good. PPI. |

If your inseam is 34" or longer, avoid a 993...

Ryan, If I ever sell my Middy its gonna be for a 993, a coupe...though I would have no problem with a Cab if the right deal came along.
What "the" said. Bite, but chew slowly. Get the PPI. Reward yourself if it checks out - hasn't your butt been kicked enough this year already?!

Good price, but be careful that it is not one of "Katerina's Babys"... aka Flood Car. I looked at one last year in Houston at a Porsche Dealership, of all places, which was clearly a flood car and they did not disclose it on Ebay. Lots of those cars are out there.

carfax is a good tool, but you have to be careful with it.
A clean carfax is a good starting point, and a nice hurdle to clear. Both for buying the car now, and selling it later down the road. If you later have to sell a car with a "dirty" carfax, that's a pain and will limit your market. So definately run the carfax so you know what's there. But don't rely on it too much. If it's clean, it doesn't mean the car hasn't been flooded, mileage messed with, crashed, etc. etc. Lots of stuff can happen to a car without the info being necessarily entered into a database somewhere. If it's not in a database that carfax searches, it of course won't show up. |

With so little info given in the Autotrader ad, they can't really be that desperate to sell. 993's are very solid cars, but neglected ones can be very expensive to make right. Better to spend the money upfront and get a car that's been taken care of. It will be cheaper that way.

Oh, and good luck. I'd definately pursue the car if it is one you are interested in, it is possibly a decent car at a very, very good price.
Like I said above, the dealer can always just wholesale out it's trade-ins, and that's what happens to the vast majority of trade ins, but once you get over 100,000 miles on a car, it's difficult for them to get a high value from a wholesaler. The mileage will kill them. Given the volume of cars wholesalers take in and auction off, pricing is a very rough cut. Normally, they buy cars in bunches, this car would show up just as a number on a list of dozens of cars, all they'd look at is the year and the mileage and a low number stuck in the price column. There's no PPI done, no real detailed inspection at all, so on high mileage, the worst case scenario is factored into the price. I wouldn't be surprised if all they'd get wholesale was $18K, maybe even less. So they may be trying to just blow it out, and still make a few thousand. It could definately be a good opportunity. But only a detailed PPI of the car would tell. |
