Darrent Williams

As a Broncos fan the start to 2007 is just about as bad as it could possibly be. After a tough loss last night that ended the season for the Broncos, CB Darrent Williams was shot and killed in Denver.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends, may justice be found. God Speed.

Its been a bad year for NFL players and the law. 3 have been shot, one killed. One guy had his bodyguard shot and killed right next to him. The Bengals had 8 guys arrested, and missed the playoffs.

It used to be said that society had just as much killings and problems as the pro players do, its just that the pro players situations are magnified more... perhaps that is true, but this year has been particularly bad for pro sports.

It's just mind-blowing to me that people get shot and killed every day over things that warrant a fist-fight at worst. I cannot imagine what could have transpired inside that club to cause someone to empty a clip into an occupied vehicle. Insane. And tragic.

And therein lies the problem, sadly enough.....Like a law enforcement friend of mine once said...

"Guns do not kill people, easy access to guns kills people."

A few years ago here in AZ a young girl was killed by an errant bullet fired into the air grom three miles away. Now it is unlawful to fire a weapon into the air. "What goes up...."

perhaps if they passed out complimentary machine guns at the club, so everyone would be armed... then this wouldn't have happened.

the old "let's arm the entire high school" approach.

An armed society is a polite society.

What kind of name is "Darrent" anyway? Sounds like a typo to me.

Are these guys (pro football players who've been getting shot) dealing drugs or are they getting involved with the wrong people? Are they like the rappers who are killing each other off or getting even for drug deals turned sour? What's the "rest of the story"?

Pro sports are becoming ever more populated with gang-banging thugs. That lifestyle is seen as cool with them for some unfathomable reason.

Not so sure Williams was a thug or gang banger. All reports have him as a decent young man. Yes sports has a lot of thugs but this guy might just be a victim. Damn shame too, I've got shirts older than this kid was.

They aren't, at least not all of them, but they tend to like to hang out with those gang bangers in the hood.

I'm just amazed by how many super rich folks end up shot. I've been around guns my whole life and, in fact, am rarely out of arm's length from a loaded handgun, yet, I've never even come close to getting shot or having an accident. How is that?

From OK State to the NFL Darrent Williams was not an issue with the law or thugs for that matter. I am sure there is more to the story, just a shame that a bright young man with his career ahead of him is lost.

The problem with the concept that more restrictive and complicated gun laws will reduce crime is this.
Laws are only followed by law abiding people. Gun laws will disarm overwhelmingly more law abiding citizens than criminals. This will also turn otherwise law abiding citizens into "gun criminals". In nearly every case a criminal has broken several felonies prier to weapon discharge. Law enforcement can not effectively protect individuals against crime.
Gun control increases gun related crime. Criminal control will reduce gun related crime.
Any body want to bet 50$. I bet the shooter is already a convicted criminal at least at the gross misdemeanor level and was in violation of at least 2 gun control laws at the time of the crime.

You stay out of certain parts of town after a certain hour. Some of us that used to work together had a favorite saying:

It's hard to find a good victim after midnight....
