Pelican MDs, question about healing bones
Appealing this one to the Pelican Brain Trust. This morning I bumped my hand rather forcefully against a piece of (very) solid steel. Hurt like hell instantly and I felt something pop on the back of my hand, right side. I grabbed it immediately and I felt something go pop and then there was a big ol' lump sticking out. ER visit said "nothing broken" but I've heart that before (L7 vertebrae, which really WAS broken) and they put a plaster splint on it with my hand in the Walk Like an Egyptian pose. They told me to come back in a week for follow-up X-Rays.
If it really IS broken will having it in this position for a week mess stuff up? Should I just wait it out?

Sorry should have clarified; I had X-Rays done during the ER visit that apparently show nothing broken. I'm just a bit leery because of what I pushed on in the back of my hand that then popped up (it looked like an igloo), and also because when I broke the L7 X-Rays and a CAT scan showed nothing wrong but a bone scan clearly showed the breaks.

I am no orthopedic surgeon of course, but a small fresh fracture with no mis alignment can be overlooked on a conventional X-ray the first days. When the bone healing process gets going it will show up more clearly. On the other hand (no pun intended), most fractures in the hand does not require surgical procedures.
All things considered, if you are scheduled back for a follow up X-ray in a week there is no harm done even if a fracture turns up that need surgery. Plenty of time.

Depends on what bones are involved. Bones in the hand in general do not require much in the way of setting unless they are very severely displaced which would show up on xray.
It sounds like you either have no fracture or a possible a non-displaced fracture (hairline). Either way a short course of immobilization is the correct course. Broken fingers we often just buddy tape to the finger next to them. They heal up just fine...and pretty quickly too.
