Oh my god, that's too funny!!! Moses already quote it, but it bears repeating:
"I honestly believe that in certain parts of America people have started mating with vegetables" -Jeremey Clarkson I was laughing at first, then really cringing when "the boys" drive up to the gas station. The gas station owner even refers to it as a "hick town". Man, talk about bringing stereotypes to life!!!

Welcome to Alabama. Some parts are really rough that way. There's no way I would have driven one of those cars through here.

Not being from round those parts, I don't think they realized that it wasn't a joke- they were in mortal danger.

mortal danger, but over what?
for driving around with Hill for prez? would they kill over this one? statements of manlove? that's more a diss of whoever is IN the car not liking country music?? i thought that Alabama was more about Dixie? ( could be wrong on that, if so , please feel free to correct me) i mean ,what statement on those cars, was so clearly directed at anybody at the fuel station? "i think Osama Bin Laden is A-OK" now that would be something that i would think , sure, beating is appropriate

It sure is ridiculous.
I guess the attackers wouldn't be trying to KILL, but they could easily get ahead of themselves. Keep in mind, the guys on Top Gear talk funny too. |

The guys on Top Gear talk funny?! Compared to the country-fried hicks in the video?
(no offence intended to any country-fried hick Alabamians )

There is very little tolerance for people that are "different" around here. A local woman was fired from her job because she had a "Kerry/Edwards" bumper sticker on her car. If you're not a Bible-believing Christian, you keep it to yourself. There is a girl here at work who is pretty openly gay/bisexual (she's not from around here). You should see people's reactions to her, though. You would think she has sex with vegetables or something...

You live in an enlightened, civilized and reasonably tolerant part of the world. Of course you're puzzled by this. But rural Alabama - well it's about as enlightend and civilized as the outskirts of Tikrit. You're either like them or you aint - and if you aint you're an object of suspicion at best - but more likely derision - and possibly even violence. Different world.

Much of that was clearly staged... from the opening with their fearful anticipation of putting their lives at risk to the creative editing, the dramatic music and frantic camera shots.
Granted this is supposedly for humor and wasn't intended as a documentary, but with the exxception of the woman in gas station, I saw very little confrontation. In fact...look at the good ol' boy filling his truck...the TG crew merit little more than a casual look and he completes his business. The premise could have been funny but I suspect they were looking for more drama and danger than they really encountered. Look at the people on the interstate...they were obviously pissed that this caravan were rolling down the road at 40 mph blocking traffic moreso than their "clever" messages. As a southerner who has travelled the world, I would never think of visiting a foreign country and behaving in such a manner. Unfortunately, I have to overcome the stereotype of the "ugly american" when abroad.. Last edited by Dueller; 02-12-2007 at 11:28 AM.. |

In the days when we were young and stupid and had long hair, a mate and I hitchhiked through the deep south.
Four times we had the road sign we were standing under shot at by rednecks. Four times! We lost count of the beer bottles hurled at us from passing picks ups, and the times we were just simply refused service in places based on our long hair alone - although we were always clean and had plenty of funds. Although we toured the entire country, and had many truly superb experiences, the south - and parts of Texas - really stood out as paradigms of intolerance.

it's just that several folks on this board have been very vocal about how U S A is better at everything then everyone else especially when it comes to FREEDOM® and having the best rights and what not ... liberally quoting the Constitution about everything... yet folks get beat up for having a different idea about something ( isn't that what drove the original Immigrants from Europe ... To the new lands in the first place?? persecution??? getting fired over a bumper sticker?? Quote:
now we have some rural areas too, and folks from those parts don't like citysclickers and big mouths to much either, yet they are more of the "stand back and watch the circus" way of dealing with oddness... eg , laissez-faire...
