Su-30MK - Amazing Russian Fighter Jet!
Russian SU-30- Vectored Thrust with Canards. As you watch this airplane, look at the canards moving along side of, and just below the canopy rail. This is a video of an in-flight demonstration flown by the Russian SU-30MK fighter aircraft. You'll not believe what you are about to see. The fighter can stall from high speed, stopping in less than a second. Then it demonstrates an ability to descend tail first without causing a compressor stall. It can also recover from a flat spin in less than a minute. These capabilities don't exist in any other aircraft in the world today. Take a look at the video with the sound up. This aircraft is of concern to U.S. and NATO planners. We don't know which nations will soon be flying the SU-30MK, hopefully China isn't one of them.
More here: http://www.air-attack.com/videos/80/page/6# Found here: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/12/05/russian-fighter-jet.html FYI. Best, Kurt |

Kurt,
Nice fighter but nothing a F-22 couldn't and has alreaday accomplish much better. The slow speed stuff = better target. The F-22 doesn't need to partially disable it's flight control systems either. Is it a concern to 4th generation (teen series) fighters, yes. Not so much to our 5th gen stuff. S/F, FOG |

It should be easy to spot, what with all the pink and purple smoke... not exactly "stealthy".
And it's probably capable of much higher speed with a pilot that's not so doughy. ![]() JP

I've always thought the russian aviation industry, and Sukhoi in particular, don't get the respect they deserve.

Vash,
Kinda doubt that a ManPad would actually bring one down with a single hit, though I haven’t read that book so it might be multiples. Zef and komenda, The Su 27 series are good airframes though their wings are optimized for lower speeds. Historically it’s the energy not the angles bubba who wins, with the caveat that the ROE allows one to take advantage of the situation. They also appear to have durability and reliability issues with their engines. Good combat persistence from the perspective of numbers of A-A missiles and they have better guns than the U.S. does. Not so sure about combat persistence in regards to fuel, though it’s better than a Fulcrum. The Russians make the best ejection seats in the world. Russian avionics/electronics are behind the Western world. I’d like to fly one. S/F, FOG |

Stomach,
The Russians have some talented pilots, they are even more hampered by a need for controls that the professional staff types can understand/control with, lack of flight time, and the fact that warfare is truly a team situation. Note we are also hampered by the above to lesser and greater extents. Not flying as much to train as 12-15 years ago, greater communications ability means greater interference and input from lawyers, etc. producing non-sensical ROEs that at best greatly reduce our advantages. Even among services, look at how the squids flying Tomcats were forced into an USAF box that negated the advantages of the Tomcat/Phoenix/Naval aviator advantages. S/F, FOG |

Not sure stalling at high speed is good in a dog fight.

Nice acrobatics!
Now back to reality...airplanes shoot each other beyond visual range. You can make piruettes as much as you want. How's Sukhois radar? Avionics? Radar signature? Engine longevity? Without having forementioned stuff top-notch it's just a expensive aerobatics plane. Impressive, yes. But plane is nothing than a weapons system. It should carry weapons and evade being shot. Somehow, I believe missiles can turn faster than that, despite thrust-vectoring and all... No one does dog-fighting anymore.
