Very true, I hung out with a guy who was born in Hilo for awhile... he did OK with a little creative living... grow your own fruit... raise chickens... barter with the neighbors etc.

But yeah, Hawaii is probably just a dream... plan B is to retire here is So Cal... darn, someone pass the spicy tuna roll please.

My plan is watch and wait - details are in Dueller's thread.

Fortunately, I have the expat thing covered, but really hope it isn't going to be necessary. Interesting times ahead.

How do you go about figuring out a ten year plan? Is it what you dream it should be, realistic or a blend of the two? I think the later, but not sure. Any good resources available someone would like to share?

To be a good, honorable person that lives a productive principle-centered life.
To be as happy and content then as I am now with my family, career and the universe.

The 'stuff' like money, type of car, size of house, sitting on a beach and such will all fall in place

Yes, a 10 year plan is much like a dream mixed with reality.
If you see my post; some of the things listed are 99% sure to happen, and some are on the wish list.

A good 10 year plan incorporates a 5, 2 and 1 year plan also.
A good 1 year plan has monthly, weekly and daily goals.
Where you are 10 years from now will be determined by the daily habits you create for yourself.

Hope that helps out; I'm sure others will chime in too:
Cheers,

I don't know if it's a trend but 26 of the first 46 responses are from the west coast of the US.

Believe me, other than the high cost of living I'm extremely happy living where I do now. If I want backward again all I need to do is drive four hours east.

You can have Dubai/UAE. Dealing with Oman is a total PIMA. Once you are outside Dubai what are ya going to do??? Least for me at any rate and I've enjoyed most any culture I've worked in.

no. it is just a big world out there. There is more to life than can be experienced in this country. Just a question of whether you do it as a visitor or ex-pat.

I hope to finish Cal with a couple degrees, I think fall 2010 or maybe spring 2011. Then I plan on spending a year in the South Pole working on a telescope that the US is building down there, with the assistance of the University of Chicago-where my cousin researches (Cosmology). Doing lots of machining and fabrication.

Other than that, a bunch of traveling. New Zealand, Laos, Japan, more Europe, need to do more exploring in my own country--the US--and even more in my home state! Amazing how little I've actually seen in California.

Want to avoid the whole idea of kids or marriage COMPLETELY, for at least 10 years (I'm 20 now).

I've been working on Porsche engines since I was 15, I want to move onto something else but I see potential markets reproducing aftermarket parts for 911s. So, I think I'm going to get some of the parts production in place and see where I find myself after school, and go from there.

Oh, and finish my 911!

Cheers,

Careful there ol' boy. I believe the cliche says that life is what happens when you're striving to build your future. I don't buy in to the story-book "organized" life-plan scenario. I have a great wife, a great family and a home on the lake. Life is good. Save a few bucks for the future, but live and appreciate every minute RIGHT now. Not the richest guy in the world, but that's ok with me. I spend every minute I can with my kids because they're growing fast and soon these times will be a fond memory. Work could be better but I see it as a "means to an end". Only regret in life is that I didn't pursue a "profession" in my youth. Mid-level management provides a decent paycheck. Not so bad.

In my mind, it's not about planning or setting objectives/goals. It's about striking a satisfying "balance" in your life and living each day. That balance is key. It's everywhere in nature, and it's the key to living well. Balance work, home, finances, relationships, investments, indulgences, etc.

To each his own. I've reached my goal.

Want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans!

I guess I need to think on this some. When I was 40, I had a 10 year plan and now that I'm 50 I need a new one. Now I have the time and money to do quite a bit. I am taking more trips, but more just spur of the moment types.

I am thinking of buying a winter home in the next years if prices fall, but its not a big deal. My main plan is to stay healthy and spend time with my family and friends.

I would like to do some sailing in the ocean.

Looking back, I'm glad there wasn't a "10 year master plan" created by my 20 year old self. That guy was an arsehole!

I would luv to live in Switzerland or Australia. Have very good friends in both places. BUT, look at the taxes you would pay in either. Outlandish!

I've been in all 50 states and over 20 countries. Often, while traveling, my wife will say "Wouldn't be be great to live here?".......She's always looking thru rose-colored glasses.

I'm more practical, do a little research and ask her things like: So you live in Venice, how you gonna like taking the water taxi to the mall or grocery store in the winter? Where you gonna park you car in Geneva; things like that.......

Same for the US, The Flordia that looks great in the winter would drive me crazy with the summer humidity, insects and all that...
