Too big to fail

Question: if you had a 17 year-old daughter... a) would you let her go to said event with a 20 year-old guy; b) would everyone be as 'encouraging' of the 'extracurricular' activities?

We all admit that this is a double standard. Now let's see pics of the 20 year old!

No, fortunately he doesn't have a 17 yo daughter, because then we couldn't seriously ask for pictures.

My daughter sees no problem with her brothers choice of a prom date. He's always shown very good judgement. I trust him completely. That means I trust that won't do anything remarkably stupid. He won't use drugs or drink and drive. Keeping his hands off his prom date may be setting the bar a little high.

Thinking he is not having sex with her already or on prom night is not really all that reasonable

She smiled. It was the answer she expected (and wanted).

I suppose it depends upon what your expectations/hopes are. A seventeen year old high schooler and a 20 year old partying college girl seem destined to get busy. Another, perhaps larger, issue is safety, i.e., transportation. If there is drinking, there will be drunk driving. Your son may not drink and drive, but, as we all know, our judgment is not at its peak when we are drunk. He may drive or, more likely, ride with someone who is impaired. High schoolers, booze, cars, peer pressure and up all night is a bad combo. My rule, for both of them, would be absolutely no drinking. I've said too much.

At my sons prom once you arrived the building you couldn't leave and get back in. No going out to smoke a J or hit the bottle. Then there was an all night school sanctioned lock in after party. So far in the 30 years I'm familiar with their program it seems to have worked. I would have heard about it otherwise as my wife works in the school system.

Perhaps I'm playing devil's advocate, but is 17 years old really too young to be drinking and having sex, so long as it's safe? How old were any of us our first time? I was 17 and but for the lack of certain things, I would've been 16. I don't think I was too young at the time. (ftr, I'm 32 now, married with a 1 1/2 year old daughter.) I'd be much more concerned about drunk driving.
If you've raised him right, and from what it sounds like you have, he'll know to treat her right, be responsible and get home safely. At both my high school proms (I went twice - once in grade 12, then again for grade 13, which here in Ontario used to be an optional university prep year) we were all very responsible about drinking and sex. I'm sure there might have been someone driving drunk, but it wasn't in my circle of friends. 1st prom I was the DD. It was boring and crappy. The 2nd was much better - for the after-party, I remember they rented a school bus, because it was outside the city on a farm. If memory serves (and it's definitely foggy) it took many trips back to the city to drop kids off at different times. I don't think anyone took a car, now that I think about it. Was there drinking? Yep - JD straight out of the bottle. Was there sex? Yep - on my parents' front lawn, at about 3am. Were we safe about everything? Absolutely. Not that I want to think about my own kids doing that, but I know they will, and if they're responsible about it like I was, I really have no problem with it.

Give the kid a talk about being smart, and a pat on the back for snagging a hot older college girl.
Seriously though, he can still have a good time without making any life-altering mistakes. My senior prom 10 years ago consisted of a nice dinner (sober), prom (sober), after party (semi-sober), and all night party at a hotel (absolutely *****faced). No idea what happened to my date, or what/who she was doing. She was just a friend anyway. Drank all night with a variety of people, drug her ass home at 7 am, then slept all day.

Oh yeah, and pick up something nice for yourself. The higher the alcohol content, the better.

My son has never come home with alcohol on his breath. Two kids he played baseball with since childhood have died while drunk behind the wheel. My son is pretty serious about driving responsibly.

I'm faced with the inverse problem, X2. Twin 17 y.o. stepdaughters. One has been dating a guy for nearly a year. The other has been invited to 3 different proms.

I'd have a heart to heart with him on:
Baby's bad STD's bad Underage drinking and getting caught bad Not getting your date home safely bad And give him a box or rubbers, 200 in cash, the number to my best friend so he can call him to come take care of stuff if he needs it no questioned asked, And I'd sleep good that night. |

Our school system is doing the same thing now. On one hand having teen daughters, I am happy, OTOH, it sounds pretty lame compared how it was done when I was in school.
