OK, I'm still near the rails, waving at where this thread has wound up, but my $.02.
I rode in Brooklyn and Manhattan for 5 years, at just about any time between dawn and dusk. I felt safer riding there than I do out on country back roads. The statistics are what they are, but maybe it was b/c I was more alert, or drivers in the chaos that is NYC/Metro are more attuned to cyclists and traffic and pedestrians, etc. Speaking of distractions, yes I wore spandex shorts (with other shorts over them) and garishly colored/designed tops. I'd rather have some driver say "look at the homo" than "officer, I swear I never saw him." Most of the gear is sized for european (read: effeminate) men, so it there wasn't much stuff on the 6'5" 255 lb "rack". But, brother, when I wore garish, I wore an acre of it! OTOH, I usually rode/ride solo, as I can't deal with that insufferable tendency of most cyclists to claim title to some moral high ground unattainable by the rest of the world. And an Apple-owning cyclist... fuhgeddaboutit. ![]() JP

One time during a training ride, a Chinese girl in her late twenties started talking to me from the open window of her Mercedes. She ended up being a surgeon, living in an apartment in Beverly Hills, and having skin which smelled like vanilla. She told me, "You can't keep up with me. Not in those cute tight clothes and on that bicycle." Well, I did. That's how I found out she was a surgeon, lived in Beverly Hills and smelled like vanilla.
Now, what was it you guys were saying about guys in spandex on bicycles?

1/2 of the children that drown, under the age of 4, do so in toilets & buckets. How much longer can we allow this carnage?
Ban toilets! Outlaw buckets!

needless deaths? I suppose if they didn't die on bicycles they'd live forever.
Everyone dies, no matter what. You can't save a life, only pospone a death. |

It's dangerous, they say. If I ride, I stay in shape, live longer, and maybe get run over. Either way, I die happy. If I don't ride, I get fat and lazy, like most Americans, and am ensured a shorter life. Strokes different. I'll take ******y shorts any day.

Spandex is a safety device....see if you can follow along. If you look at something you'll hit it. If you see a guy in spandex, you'll look away...presumably towards the road.
![]() I wear that stuff it's not *that* comfortable. But, ever ride a bike in boxers and cargo pants? Can you say Chafing? I will not post a photo. FWIW, I don't understand why fat straight desk jockeys seem to have such a problem with how people dress. Whenever I see a guy out riding, I wish I wasn't cruising with the a/c on to eat dinner and veg in front of the PC after a long day. I wish I had time energy to ride after work.
