We went to a bar in San Jose that had a whole table full of these! Buy a drink and get two critters to eat. We left happy!

I dunno if eating crawdads is such a good idea:
ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- The South tips the scales again as the nation's fattest region, according to a new government survey. Overall, about 26 percent of to the CDC's telephone survey were obese. More than 30 percent of adults in each of the states tipped the scales enough to ensure that the South remains the nation's fattest region. Colorado was the least obese, with about 19 percent fitting that category in a random telephone survey last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 2007 findings are similar to results from the same survey the three previous years. Mississippi has had the highest obesity rate every year since 2004. But Alabama, Tennessee, West Virginia and Louisiana have also clustered near the top of the list, often so close that the difference between their rates and Mississippi's may not be statistically significant. These are the 10 states with the highest levels of adult obesity, according to a 2007 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 1. Mississippi, 32.0 percent 2. Alabama, 30.3 3. Tennessee, 30.1 4. Louisiana, 29.8 5. West Virginia, 29.5 6. Arkansas, 28.7 7. South Carolina, 28.4 8. Georgia, 28.2 9. Oklahoma, 28.1 10. Texas, 28.1 Source: Associated Press Why is the South so heavy? The traditional Southern diet -- high in fat and fried food -- may be part of the answer, said Dr. William Dietz, who heads CDC's nutrition, physical activity and obesity division. The South also has a large concentration of rural residents and black women -- two groups that tend to have higher obesity rates, he said. Colorado, meanwhile, is a state with a reputation for exercise. It has plentiful biking and hiking trails, and an elevation that causes the body to labor a bit more, Dietz said. |

Crawdads are high in sodium (because of how they are cooked) and not high in fat. However I believe the stats you posted. Prolly all of the fried chicken and such..

My lawyer's office was in San Jose so everytime I saw him I would visit one or two of these, The Hotel Del Rey and the bar there, The Blue Marlin, Tinys, Nashville East and Nashville West. On occasion go to the Key Largo. If you were looking for an expat these were the spots to look.

Going to a crayfish boil is on my list of things to do before I die.
I have had crayfish at seafood buffets but they just taste a little different from shrimp at that point. I have had "sweet shrimp" at the sushi bar where the serve the tails raw and deep fry the heads.

Another way to have "sweet shrimp" is as follows: The folks @ Avery Island have a new Tabasco flavor called "Sweet & Spicy"...Boil you some shrimp (or 'bugs), then glaze 'em over with this new sauce and finish either on a stick or tossed in a wok. This new Tabasco has a "somewhat sweet" Asian quality to it, but with just a little kick. I'm going through at least a bottle/week just dipping pretzel sticks in it!

The wife and I were invited to a Cajun style boil over in Carlsbad. The guy hosting it was from one of those top 10 obese states - can't recall which. Anyway, he had many lbs of those water bugs (smaller than what Mule posted) shipped over from the south where they were thrown into a giant boiler with major spices, potatoes, and *stuff*. This was all dumped onto a park table covered with plastic. Tap beer and eating commenced. Not bad but I'm not anxious about doing it again - don't consider bugs (water or land based) a part of my diet.
