Wow, you answered it as I typed it. So that's tethering. Okay, so can the BlackBerry do that? Is there some additional plan I need with the BB to enable tethering?

Here's ATT's rates for "BlackBerry Personal" - tethering rates included too:

I just bought my wife a new iPhone - she and I both had older iPhones (I kept mine).
Battery life is much less on the new iPhone, so I got her a car charger (she is a HEAVY user of talk time/email, not so much web). For the week it took to get the car charger, I turned off 3G and might just do that all the time as she doesn't use the web much. I am actually happy with our iPhones. These things I have no trouble with speedwise: Typing without "real" keys Maps/traffic Old iPhone: Triangulated location (accurate in cities/interstates, less so in the middle of nowhere) New iPhone: GPS - quick, accurate. Web sites when you really need them (sites take up to a minute - but I don't often need more than email/maps - and American Airlines, USA Today, Amazon, have iPhone sites now that load quickly) These things are too slow: Complicated real web sites (Wall Street Journal, etc.) The new iPhone is much faster, but still too slow for my tastes on complicated sites unless I really need to access them. The drinking through a straw idea is valid. But, having said that, I don't think the WiFi is fast enough on a phone either compared to a computer.....I have a computer at work, another at home and a light laptop with a USB AirCard, so I am spoiled and don't much use the web on the phone for complicated websites. But when you really need it, it's there, even if it takes a minute (train schedules, airport delays, news stories, yelp). As I said, the easy/light stuff, like maps, email, is fine. Things you might consider/want: Car charger as iPhone 2.0 seems to discharge before a long day is over Can't cut/paste No Flash yet The last two will likely be fixed soon. The first means buy a couple of kinds of chargers. Last edited by RKC; 08-15-2008 at 09:41 AM.. |

My garden variety BB Pearl can be tethered. Never tried it, but I found an online procedure to set it up.
AT&T's intent to control EVERY aspect of cell phone ownership is one reason why I won't switch from T-Mobile. I'd like to, AT&T has much more/better phones. T-Mobile doesn't try to limit tethering (or charge more money), and they don't disable aps like BB Maps THAT COME INSTALLED ON YOUR PHONE. Damn that pisses me off, then they try to sell you their own mapping program. But my hatred of AT&T runs deep, back years ago to when they were the only long distance provider available in my area, and raped us on charges. VoIP fixed that problem.

No calendar sync on the Instinct?! I thought that was basically standard. Outlook sync is one of my favorite BB features, otherwise I'd probably miss every work meeting scheduled.

I think the instinct is more of a multimedia device than a business device. The new palm 800w has more biz related stuff then most. I am sure outlook will be on the instinct at some point.
I am more excited about the new BB Curve coming out for Nextel (iDEN) but thats my flavor. |

I've only played with an Instinct for a few minutes, so my views should be weighted as such, but the Instinct, while it is a decent phone in some ways, it is no iPhone. Actually, it's not even that close, IMO. Island would really like the web experience on the Instinct!

I am thrilled with my iphone 3G. It takes a little while to get the texting in down, but otherwise the interface is great. Yes, the glass gets smudged and nasty, but its no big deal.
Turning off wireless increases battery life considerably. I am very happy with mine. |

My wife and I have had the iPhone 3G practically since it's launch here in Australia (had to wait a few days for the 16Gb versions as they sold out quick).
Works really well, I can connect to my work Exchange server to get push email, calendar and contacts. I can use it as a proxy "modem" by using an App called "Netshare" - cost me US$12.99 - I think Apple has taken this app down from iTunes, but it may be back by now, but it works very well and very useful when I am travelling for work - I tether my iPhone to my Macbook. I've used Psions, Palms. Treos and Windows Mobile smartphones, but the iPhone, for me, has been the best phone I've ever had.

I just got the new iphone 3g for me and my fiance. We both love it to death. Sure there are a few things that take some getting used too, like the keyboard. But, that doesn't take long and the whole thing is soo damn user friendly. What else can I say?

"Replacing the expensive phone to replace the battery is a joke."
- But that is NOT true, is it? You send the phone back to Apple & they replace the battery with anew one - not replace the phone with a new one. And how much does it cost? |

RWebb:
It's $85 to replace the battery on an "out of warranty" iPhone: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/battery/ iPhone warranty covers the battery and is for a one year period. Some third parties will sell and install a new, comparable battery for around or less than half that. See www.ipodjuice.com for example - these guys offer a 10 year warranty! The original iPhone's battery is soldered to the main board, but the new 3G's is not, but I have read both batteries are difficult to get at. The price is typically half again or less if one replaces the battery his/herself; around $20. I did read somewhere that in some cases Apple may just give you a new iPhone if you have battery problems under warranty, then repair the old iPhone and sell it as refurbished. FYI. Best, |
