I can't believe you guys are wasting so much bandwidth on this pointless argument, when we could be educating Tabs on the fine points of wine.

Really.

For such a smart guy, you need to actually comprehend what you claim to be reading. I am still reading some of what you have posted, but this link of yours:http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/694a6eb0-4eb5-11dc-85e7-0000779fd2ac.html, completely supports what I have been saying. I still refuse to do the work for you. What reason have you decided on for your lack of knowledge? Too stupid or too lazy?

At the last count, Algerian women living in France averaged an estimated 2.57 children, against 1.94 for French women overall.

(2.57-1.94)/1.94 = 32%

Isn't that the figure I provided?

The Charles de Gaulle has suffered from a variety of problems [see James Dunnigan's "How NOT to Build an Aircraft Carrier"]. The Charles de Gaulle took eleven years to build, with construction beginning in 1988 and entering service in late 2000. For comparison, constructino of the American CVN 77 began in 2001 with a projected delivery in 2008. The 40,000 ton ship is slower than the conventionally powered Foch, which she it replaced. The propellers on the CDG did not work properly, so she recycled those of the Foch. The nuclear reactor was problematic, with the engine crew receiving five times the allowable annual radiation dose. The flight deck layout has precluded operating the E-2 radar aircraft.

I did a little comparison with the de Gaulle and the George Washington. Keep in mind that the Washington is two times larger than the de Gaulle

GW de Gaulle
Laid down 1986 1989
Commissioned 1990 1994
In Service 1992 2001

4 years for the GW from start to commission (bottle broken over her) and 2 years into service

The de Gaulle took 5 years from start to commission and another 7 years to work out the issues.
Not an apples to apples comparison. Who ever said the CDG was a Nimitz class carrier? It was designed for different roles than our carriers. Did you know the French CDG is perminatley configured to house 800 commandos? Our Nimitz carriers are not. Obvisously different roles for different requirements.

Also the GW was not the first US nuclear carrier. The CDG is France's first nuclear carrier. Everybody has learning curves with new technology. And most of the delays in commissioning for the CDG were polictical, not technical in nature. Look that up.

Here is the build and commissioning history of the first US nuclear carrier: In 1958 Enterprise’s keel was laid at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. On September 24, 1960 the ship was launched for the first time, sponsored by Mrs. W. B. Franke, wife of the former Secretary of the Navy. On November 25, 1961 the Enterprise was commissioned, with Captain Vincent P. DePoix in command. On January 12, 1962 the ship then made its maiden voyage conducting a three-month shakedown cruise. After commissioning, Enterprise began a lengthy series of tests and training exercises designed to determine the full capabilities of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

Not quite lighting fast either, was it? (we also had the Cold War spurring on our military budgets at that time.)

What is this thread about?

I enjoyed the part about Phyloxera blight, I didn't know it originally came from the USA.

I wonder if there are any PRE-phyloxera wines around that date from before the US rootstocks.

Also weighing heavily on the French side of the balance that nobody has mentioned is ESCOFFIER. If it is true that French cuisine is a religion, Escoffier is its Bible.

One of the best books about French cooking was written by an American woman, Julia Child. Jacques Pepin said, in his autobiography The Apprentice, that it was one of the only books that distilled the lessons and techniques of being an apprentice down into a book. That's pretty high praise. Of course his own Complete Techniques is something very special as well.

You may now resume the troll baiting.

Math with no background information is empty statistics. Read through the thread. How many Algerian women in your books study were white French returning immigrants? We don't know, because race is not recorded.

After Algeria became independent in 1962, more than one million Pied-Noir settlers of French nationality returned to mainland France over the next 45 years.

Since race is not recorded in France, how do you generate accurate statistics? Calling all people for Algerians as non-native French stock is genetically and religious incorrect. So much for the accuracy of your chosen statistics.

Haha, yea. I'm sure that the huge number of Algerian-born Frenchwomen streaming into France and having babies is skewing the data

You are too defensive to even realize that I threw you a softball with that stat. The 32% difference is much lower than the typical figure bandied about.

French women are trolls, Algerian women bait.

Wait.

French tanks were the bait, German tanks the trolls.

Wait.

California wines are the bait, French wine the trolls.

Wait.

The USS Nimitz class carrier is the troll, Chuck DG the bait.

Wait.

Some brave Frenchmen died and we're still involved in this two stick fire.

Finally, something interesting pops up into this pointless thread. We should have a thread on food. My next trip to New York will consist of nothing but eating fine food, and resting for the next meal.

Eric Ripert's place is on the top of my list. I think Thomas Keller has a place there now, too.

You are not understanding the problem. The French cannot determine these figures. The government does not have them. This is no small matter to the French. In order to obtain the breakdown of non- French native stock Algerians and their birthrates would require a change in the French Constitution.

I have yet to obtain a copy of the book, but where are they obtaining the data for making this claim? How are they defining what an Algerian born woman is? And where would they obtain the numbers from? France does not record that data.

Softball or just wild-assed guess. It doesn't matter what is being bandied about, it takes real data to make a claim. There are only guesses out there, because the data is not being recorded. What part of that don't you understand?

1. Your snot nosed, arrogant, "Edited - language removed, Z-man" doesn't know a damned thing about me or my "breeding."

2. Your feelings are hurt because you made a statement that was wrong to the point of being foolish, & I called you on it. Whaaah.

I don't know how old you are but it might be time to consider growing up.
