I remember many a day of riding in my uncles 911 up to Vail from Denver. We went through all kinds of badness - cars off the road everywhere - and we chugged along unscathed. That motor sitting right over the wheels puts the power to the ground. Little know fact that 911s (and old VW Beetles) are great in the snow with the right tires and driver. Unfortunately, the defoggers aren't quite as well suited to driving in blizzard consitions, but we managed.

Once the early 996 C4s drop to the $10-15K level, I think it'd be my first choice for a winter car. Excellent heat, four wheel drive... just need to find one with a new replacement engine.

Alternatively, you could sell your current car, add the $15k you had budgeted for the 2nd 911, and buy a 993 Carrera 4. That's my plan.

What color? Where are you picking it up? Are you driving it back?
Enquiring minds want to know!

had a 944 Turbo....that thing was an absolute nightmare on snow/ice. ...even with Blizzaks.
However, I did drive my '67 912 for an entire winter as my DD. the narrow wheels, good balance, and lower power were awesome in the snow. I had no problems barreling through Northern Indiana snow.

Here are a few candidates for a winter 911: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=254948153 http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=252876022 http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=253403355 And if you need a project, you could turn it into a 953 clone! ![]()

Gon fix it with me hammer

only beef with 944 is the handbrake
it's at the wrong location , and in the snow, i do like a bit of pre-corner-entry tail wag And you just can't alternate between steering wheel, left hand HB, right hand shifter, that's no bueno. you can workaround it a little bit, simply drop a gear and make em spin, but it takes more commitment since your wheels are at speed and your throttle is open... but other then that, great fun in the snow... i got my now parted out 944S up to 100kph in fresh snow, on narrow (car width+ maybe half a meter on each side to spare) farmcountry roads, no sweat

The tanking dollar meant that a $14,000 US car was costing me well over $20k. And the $14,000 C4's really weren't great cars. So I started looking locally. I found this about five miles from home: http://www.pcaucr.org/forum/post.jsp?postid=7998 118,000 km, just had a $10,000 engine rebuild, and it is in really great shape. In the end I paid less than I would have for the $14,000 US car, but I didn't get the holiday. So, yes I am driving it home, in a few weeks. And yesterday a fellow Pelican delivered four snows on OEM rims to my son in Montreal. I have to go fetch those in early January.
