I was talking with my 'smith the other day and he said that it looks like the guys that make the GSG are going to offer a 9mm variant under the 1k mark.

doing the "combat wombat" .22 matches now for around 8 months straight and shooting 325 rds in 2.5-3 hrs each match depending on how many people show up, you start to become familiar w/what werks and what doesnt.

most popular ammo bar none/accurate/least amt of fouling/least amt FTF/FTE: FEDERAL. hands down.

this is the natural progression of US FANATICAL .22 "combat wombat" shooters that strive for UBER PERFECTION! ie. juan shot-juan kill when killing the hell out of moving/stationary metal targets thru barrels/around barrels/under barrels/thru water pipes etc.

mine started life as a RUGER mark III/22-45 6 7/8" stainless fluted barrel. well me being me and always having to make sumthang better and having disposable brains not income............opted for a tactical solutions.com match threaded barrel with picatinny rail on top. with compensator(uber cool looking) and thread protector and LOW FRONT ORANGE TRU-GLO type sight/rear adjustable sights.


this sets me up for more mindless/brainless FUN when i opt to jump out of "limited" class and jump into "UNLIMITED" class where the SKYS THE LIMIT! and more mindless/brainless money $$$$$ goes flowing out of yer pocket. can you say "VOLQUARTZEN" everything and OPTICS thru the roof! "unlimited" class veapons will shoot the eyelash off a chipmunk at 50yds all day. INSANE ACCURATE INSANE MONEY! hell of alot of FUN!

i opted for the ruger because of how it fits my hand. volquartzen makes a match right hand and left hand grip that i have tried and really like. but when i put this on it will be a dedicated "right(correct)hand" veapon and will preclude my "left-(wrong)" handed son from shooting.

now to solve this juance and fer all since i have a 6 7/8" brand new stainless barrel doing nothing i tried to purchase a 22/45 lower from ruger in prescott. this is a non saleable item. why? i havent a clue since the registered FFL/ATF part is the upper barrel. threw some ads around and didnt find a lonesome 22/45 lower. so my solution is to buy the cheapest blue stubby barrel mark III 22/45 complete (seen them new for $259) and mount the 6 7/8" stainless barrel on it so my son can make it a dedicated left-wrong handed veapon. then he can do as he pleases and its a natural progression to a .45 for a soon to be 21 year old kid.

the threaded barrel for a browning or a ruger is a great deal considering you can get into a .22 suppressor fairly cheap. around $500 bucks out the door for your class III papers and the suppressor. i highly recommend the AWC titanium suppressor. shot this alot and it is very quiet and easy to clean. AWC is here in scottsdale,az. so any problems its a easy fix to solve any unlikely problems.

another thing to think of when suppressing is yer front sight. in my case the tactical solutions threaded barrel with LOW FRONT sight werks very well with the AWC suppressor. other mfgs have a larger O.D. can and this will NOT allow you to use low sights and you will have to purchase tall sights to clear can(suppressor)

I held one of those at a shop last week. It felt very solid and well built. Pretty heavy for a pistol though, IMO.
I am shopping for an AR in .22lr... I'd like to find one with a threaded barrel so it can share a suppressor (don't own one yet) with my Walther P22.

In other .22 pistol news, my P22 broke the hammer spring. Walther was very easy to deal with last time a spring broke, but now when I call I get stuck in voicemail limbo, transferring between nonexistant phone numbers.

Turners has the Ruger Mark III on sale for a couple pennys short of $300. I have one in DROS for the upcoming 'lean' year(s)...22LR is fun and cheap.

If you buy a Ruger, I suggest you install a Volquartsen extractor. I loved my MkII, but hated the tendency to FTE on cheap ammo. The new extractor made a world of difference. They also make nice parts for your 10/22.

And if you like a larger grip, the Ruger is available as what they call the 22/45 - which has the grip size and feel of a 1911.



Hoots posted a ruger with a silencer, but if you really want to go that route, why not just get a Gemtech Oasis upper? The silencer is integral, so you don't have an extra 8" weighing down the nose of your pistol.

I just read (re-read? maybe not the best memory) this thread. I'm struck by how many excellent options, across the price spectrum there are for a .22 handgun whose primary use will be target shooting. Reliable, accurate, and durable aren't really different goals, but rather a common starting point. As long as you aren't limited to a $50 budget, it seems as though you'd almost have to intentionally make a poor choice. Incidentally, put me down in the Single-Six camp, safe, simple, shoots better than I can, and will consume without issue any ammo it is fed.

I used to have a Single Six.
Loved it and have been considering getting another one.
It's certainly a gun that you can't go wrong with if you like a revolver for plinking.

Very happy with both my Ruger Mk II and my GSG 1911-22. Would also be happy with a Buckmark or S&W 317/617 revolver.

All true. I bought a MK II bull barrel in 1984 and it is still a plinking machine. I bought a used Singe Six last year (manufactured in 1960) and enjoy it just as much.

ANY of the pistols in this thread could find a home with me

There are a lot of options out there now that were not when this thread was started I believe.

I went to the site and see that I can't click on any thing there to order,etc. I found some at Buds Gun Shop at about the same price but most models there are outta stock. Guess I'd have to call Turner and have them ship to my FFL. I have a couple of Mk II's but with the tapered bbl. Rather have that 22/45 bull bbl.

Yeah, that's the danger with a thread like this, it makes you aware of needs you didn't know you had.

Oh, and nobody's mentioned Ruger's SP101 in .22, something that price-wise fits between S&W's 617 and Taurus's double-action .22.

The PPK/S is very nice, accurate, feels good. The TPH is a lot of fun. I guess they would be more plinkers than target pistols.

The grip angle, sight picture and feed characteristics of both firearms is remarkably similar.
