As seen around town

I see these from time to time around LA. My daughter snapped this for me with her cell phone.

I usually see them on the left front wheels (although they could be on the other side too). Usually on compact cars. The rear wheel had a hubcap btw.

Some type of wheel odometer? But why on only one wheel?

I've seen them on Saturns.
I think they put them on during shipping to the dealer, some people think that they must belong there so they never remove them

Front left tire?

Looks like the plugs dirt-track racers use to keep crap out of the front left brake.

Although I do not know why you would see them around LA, they look like Spiders. These are an effective substitution for tire chains for snow. The piece that you see bolts on to the hub before the trip. Then, if you run into the bad road conditions, a second piece snaps on in seconds.

The product allows for easy and speedy installation, and the Spiders fit in wheel wells that are too tight for standard chains.

Now that makes the most sense.

Sorry for the crappy shot - it was blown up from a cell phone pic.
