Guggenheim, Smuggenheim...back to guns.

I revived this thread because I already had many of my questions answered earlier...but my birthday is coming up and I'd like a Ruger Vaquero.

Three questions:

- Is stainless the preferred finish for backpacking/outdoor carry use?
- Is 4.62 the preferred barrel length for backpacking/outdoor carry use?
- I shoot .45 now, with the Vaquero is .357 or .45 preferred?

Lastly, any holster recommendations...

Jordi,

I've been looking at a 45 ACP wheel gun. How do they compare to the .357 Magnum?

The good thing about guns is that they do not loose much in value if you keep them up. Some of them even go up and outperform inflation ...

REALLY..U must be kidding....

The best way to do it is tobuy em is used NIB condition...for example take what I picked up just the other day....a nice little Sharps model 74 made by Dakota Arms in 22 Hornet... List price on that lil Sharps is $4295 plus the 2 custom options of 1/2 round and 1/2 octogon B and Colour Case hardening at $900.00 for a retail price tag of $5195. I will be into it for under a safe opening 30 cents on the USD...

1. SS is a durable and rust resistant..so yes for outdoor carry

2. U have to lug the beotch with you..so yes the shorter B is not only a weight savings but can be pulled from the holster quicker...in an emergency.

3...45 WHAT? LC or ACP....both are heavy cartridges when compared to the 357round ..the choice should be 44 mag or 357 mag...as the utility of the 2 45's is lessor than the 357...Let us just put it this way the 357 was developed for Law enforcement use back in the 1930's...the round can penetrate car bodies...so for whatever you might want a cartridge for the 357 should be adequate..unless you have a pissed off Grizzzz coming after you....than I would be of the mind of throwing either the 44 or anyother pistola cartridge gun at the Grizz and start running for my life...if that is the case only a 375 HH would make me stand and ask the Grizz if he feels lucky today....SO 357 is the answer.to the question.

OHH BTW with that Grizz a 416 Rigby would make me feel even better....

Gentlemen, focus: Old thread now about me. Edit: Oops, Tabs is quicker than I.
And, Tabs, you operate in a far different orbit than I do with respect to guns...I follow your gun posts and wallow in envy.

How bad are the Rossi's? My funds are low, but I'm thinking of a $299 Rossi .357 Magnum.

The 'new' Vaqueros have been downsized a bit to be more SAA size. If you reload and want the higher power loads like the Blackhawks can handle, look for an 'old' model Vaquero.

I agree on the first two points, but vehemently disagree on the third.

The Ruger Vaquero comes in .45 Colt. The Blackhawk is available in a "convertible" model, coming with both a .45 Colt and a .45 ACP cylinder. The latter is worse than useless in a single action, which will not accept the half moon clips that make the rimless .45 ACP viable in a revolver. So. let's dismiss the .45 ACP altogether, at least for the purposes of this discussion, and move onto the .45 Colt.

As an all-around backpacking, woods bumming round, one can do no better. Especially if one does not reload. The big, heavy, slow moving bullet of the .45 Colt is far more effective on the kinds of targets one is likely to engage in the wilderness than the .357. For urban use, I can see a fast stepping, light bullet hollow point load from the .357 as superior against the two legged predators one is likely to encounter. But, out in the wilderness, penetration rules. The .45 Colt's 250 grain lead bullet has it in spades. The .357 is lacking in this regard, unless one is a hand loader who can put up some specialized heavy cast bullet loads. Even then, while it may penetrate, it simply leaves a much smaller hole. I would very strongly recommend the .45 Colt, and I do so from personal experience of having taken game with both. The big .45 is a very noticeably better killer on wild animals.

The Ruger New Vaquero is a different gun than the original Vaquero. It's a lot smaller. The original was built on the Super Blackhawk size frame, which is a good deal bigger than the original Colt Peacemaker. The New Vaquero, at the behest of the Cowboy Action shooting fraternity, has been "downsized" to match the size of the original Colt. It is now a very handy little gun. I bought one just last year to save wear and tear on my Colt, and it has now become my primary all-around carry gun when I'm out bumming around our Cascades. Mine is the 4 5/8" barrel, which is by far the handiest for an all day carrying single action.

So, in short, go with the stainless 4 5/8" .45 Colt. I can't think of a better outdoorsman's sidearm.

stainless is best period as far as rust and holster wear.

the BEST holsters i have found are BIANCHI hands down

if ya buy the vaquero in .357 you can also buy a marlin /winchester lever action rifle in .357 as well as some older winchesters in .45LC.

i dont buy NOTHING anymore unless its stainless. PERIOD or it has a HK "HE" hostile environment finish. blue guns just dont handle any moisture without out uber care.

and a rusted gun is kind of like the let down ya get when yer weiner dont work no more.

i like 3"-4" barrels for general outdoor carry unless im hunting w/a pistol. then i want 6-8".

if im just camping/fishing in a relatively safe area meaning a non bear area, i will take my 2" smith "J" frame .357. its lightweight. you figure out real fast how much a 6-8" .44 mag weighs humping that damn thing all over hells creation.

Thanks to all.

My Dad has an old Colt Officers model (I think) that I shot last Christmas when he was here. I really enjoyed the size and feel.

The New Vaquero is the natural choice and I feel Jeff's recommendation is spot on. Pics to follow!

Jeffy your OLD SCHOOL...I LOVE the 45 LC...have a bunch of em...coupla Colt NS TGTS ...A Colt Bisley...and some others...

For Muzzle velocity...the 357 has it over the 45LC ..that equates to penetration, For Muzzle ENERGY the 357 is about equal..that means stopping power. And it is a FLAT Shooter....IF ya got the stones ya can even drop a Grizz with one...For BACK PACKING...the 357 is a dandy...

BUT WE ARE SPLITTING **** HAIRS NOW AREN"T WE?

Colt Officers Models were first introduced in 1904 and discontinued in 1970. They were offered in 3 calibers...22 LR in 1930, 32 Spl...special order until Colt made a production run in 1940 and the venerable 38 Spl starting in 1908. Until 08 the 38 was a 38 LC which was an anemic version of the 38SPL..Colt beefed up the action at that time to accept the 38 spl. After WW2 only the 22LR and 38 SPl were offered with a short run of 22 WM in the late 1960's.

They were offered with 4, 4.5, 5, 6 & 7.5 inch Barrels. Six inch barrels are most common the 22LR was only offered in 6 inch B, There are only one or two known 32's in 7.5B..I had one but sold it to a major collector of Colt DA's. The 7.5 inch is not as easily found but if one looks one can find..The other Barrel lengths are difficult to find especially the 4 inch B. After WW2 ONLY the 6 inch B was offered.

The poor Colt Officers Model is a fine fine piece of work with an action smooth as glass. The knock on em that they are 38's an not a 357. Todays prices do not reflect the quality of the weapon.. U won't find a better revolver in 22LR than the Officers Model..the action is smooth as butter and as crisp as glass on the trigger pull..

The Colt officer's model revolvers are great. I have two. For target shooting they are great with the .38.

I am not opposed to .357's at all.

or a .44

Congrats on the Guggenheim thing. That is awesome.

I have a Colt Officer's Model in .38 Special.

Believe it or not, I prefer my S&W Model 66 for target shooting over the Colt.

Oh, and I didn't like wheel guns until I inherited a few good ones. I had an H&R 929 in .22LR that I promptly returned. It was a piece of crap.
