Lord Stanley

Penquins just beat the Flyers in OT to go up 2-0 in the series. Wouldn't it be just peachy to have the Stanley Cup & the Lombardi Trophy both in the steel citay :D

Aerkuld 04-17-2009 07:03 PM

The two Flyers players who gave the Penguins a 5 on 3 power play must be kicking themselves. There's no excuse for that kind of behavior when the pressures on like that. They lost their team the game. I'm glad the Penguins won!

Por_sha911 04-17-2009 07:14 PM

What a game! The Flyers in the sin-bin gave the game to the Pens. As far as the cup in concerned, you'll have to visit Boston to see it.

Hate to break it to ya, the road to the Stanley Cup runs through Detroit. Pen's could not handle the Wings last year and I see more of the same this year if they meet.

Richards had the game on his stick--to make it 3-1 but Marc Andre Fleury ( best YOUNG goalie in the NHL) made an unbelievable leg save.

I do agree Detroit is a machine and the Ducks are the best 8th seed in the league. This will be an interesting play-off for sure.

Not that anyone outside pittsburgh would care. ;)

I didn't even realize the playoffs were under way. Hockey is too flukey a sport for me. Too many games are decided by totally random deflections and dumb luck. I just cannot get into it like i once did.

I hate the detroit red army team.

Honestly, that team should be deported back to the Rodina where they belong.

AbbyAk 04-17-2009 09:57 PM

Ummm...

They are mostly Swedes in Detroit these days..Datsyuk would be the prominent Russian--some eastern European guys(Hudler, Hossa), but not that Russian these days..but a very good team..

And yes, I would like to see someone else win it this year.....

m21sniper 04-17-2009 10:57 PM

They will forever be stinkin' commies to me. ;)

That may very well be true. And if they meet it will be a good series for sure.

Maybe they couldn't handle the Wings, ( I lived in Michigan for a few years I like the Red Wings), but they fought litterally to the last second. Experience would help this go-around.

Don't think so. The west has too many good teams for anyone to be a lock. And lots of teams with great, as opposed to adequate, goalies.

And I'm not a Detroit hater, just a student of hockey and statistics.

Taz's Master 04-18-2009 08:14 AM

A Pens or Flyers Cup would bring Pennsylvania yet another championship. Surely Obama's policies will level the playing field (so to speak) and allow another state to feel like champions too?

I believe the West is too strong. Maybe if they beat the crap out of each other getting to the final, but otherwise, I just can't see a team from the East winning. Penguins are not as good as last year, and the Flyers take too many dumb penalties. It's not 1975 any more.

m21sniper 04-18-2009 01:21 PM

The flyers problem the last 20 years has been a lack of a blue chip goalie.

Put Patrick Roy in the pipes during the Lindros-Leclair-Legion of Doom era and they could have probably won 4 or 5 cups.

Hockey is ALL about the goaltending.

I'd argue that point, (not the Flyers, you are correct in that statement). After a few injured players came back and switching coaches they went 18-3-4 in their last 25 games. And of course Fleury is playing lights out. Haven't seen the Bruins play this year. But they are the #1 seed in the east. Will watch this evening and see how good they really are.

The statistics do not back you up. Check save percentages (both career and series) for Osgood and Barasso. Lots of 'mediocre' goalies have won the Stanley Cup. A great goalie can help you win. It is not an absolute necessity.

The Bruins are solid top to bottom. Enough speed to beat the West? Don't see that. Tim Thomas, iffy on him too. He can be great. Or awful.

Who replaces Hossa and Armstrong on the Penguins? No one equivalent. They are still good, and they benefited from a coaching change and shear desperation to make the playoffs. But they still aren't as good as last year IMO.
