opera version 8 just hung the machine..... this is getting old, really really fast.

Porsche-poor 06-02-2011 09:47 AM

so are we, I just refuse to grow up.

so i looked at the requirements for a few of the games i want to run. 32MB is twice what they need. i am going to toss this video card back into the parts bin.

Porsche-poor 06-02-2011 10:11 AM

gently toss it. Some computer nerd might buy it off ya for big bucks.

nynor 06-02-2011 11:18 AM

well, i think i found part of the problem: the motherboard is assigning the same IRQ to the USB controller and the video card. as i have to use the AGP port, there is no way to change the slot. the BIOS won't let me assign IRQ's (it says it does, but changing the assignments has no affect), nor will the OS. so, putting a different card in didn't solve the problem either, as it gets the same IRQ. bollocks. i am trying it with the USB controller disabled. this sucks, as i need the USB to run the WAN NIC, or whatever it is called.

i give up. two days i've wasted on this. back to XP for this box. and hackintosh.

Porsche-poor 06-02-2011 12:27 PM

The other dave might be able to help you. But I got lost right after the word mother board.

nynor 06-02-2011 12:38 PM

i've built about 1000 win98 boxes and repaired even more. this stuff is just too new to work with win98 properly. things got really hinky once i tried installing one of the games. its not worth the investment in time. i don't feel like hacking at any more. xp runs beautifully on it and a hackintosh will satisfy my craving to monkey about.

Do you play with Ubuntu?

nynor 06-02-2011 12:52 PM

i have played with ubuntu. i even have a disk with 9.1 on it. linux has come a long way. it still doesn't do everything i need it to do. i'll probably play with it again, soon.

edit: now that i have thought about it, ubuntu does everything that osX does that i do. perhaps i should just skip the hackintosh....

Holy crap is it time to go home yet? Oh wait........................never mind

Rick V 06-02-2011 02:39 PM

I have a couple of old laptops running Ubuntu, I love them, they are simply used for d-loading and such but they work great with very little required memory

nynor 06-02-2011 02:50 PM

i am going to try the hackintosh thing again. then i'll put ubuntu on it.

Rick V 06-02-2011 03:34 PM

You will like that OS

slodave 06-02-2011 03:40 PM

Porsche-poor 06-02-2011 03:41 PM

Slackware? Is that like shorts and a tee shirt with flip flops?

slodave 06-02-2011 03:43 PM
