When I had my 81 GMC Jimmy with a 305 I did an engine swap. Instead of an expensive crate or rebuilt motor, I bought a 78 Monte Carlo from a guy that worked where I did that had a small block 400 for $200. Sold the sans engine Monte Carlo roller with tranny for $200. Did a short block rebuild and 2.02 heads re-machined and rebuilt at a very reputable shop for less than it would have cost me in parts alone. Added RV Cam, High stall, lockup torque converter, Edelbrock aluminum intake, some cheap headers, and chrome valve covers. When swapping in the 400 used a combination of the brackets from both motors to use the newer 81 A/C compressor and strip all the smog stuff. Had the Rochester 4 bbl off the 400 rebuilt and ran it. Then sold the complete 305 engine for $325. I think the whole thing ended up only costing me less than $300 out of pocket.
Ended up going from 12 mpg to 19 mpg with LOTS more power. An added benefit was 1978 cars were not required to have any smog stuff on em but 1981 did. Just had to go to an inspection station and pay $5 for a guy to read the serial number off the motor for a smog exemption certificate..

I just talked with one supplier and I can have a brand new 350 GM crate engine (260 HP) with a 3 year 36,000 mile GM warranty, with new headers, and all the gaskets and even anti-freeze needed to install the engine for $1,944.32.
G-man how much is your engine rebuild costing

Had my 2.5 liter 944 Turbo engine rebuilt by Lindsay Racing. Stroked it to 2.8 (knife edged 3.0 crank and JE coated pistons, already had forged lightweight rods), line bored and re-alusiled cylinders, upgraded turbo, waste gate, MAF, headers, exhaust, valve springs, bigger injectors, Lindsay Chips and and aluminum flywheel/stage 3 clutch. Took them a year and cost $12,000. Running 16psi boost the 400rwhp engine lasted 4500 miles then cratered.

Got signed off by the CHP. He looked at the bike for all of 3 minutes. Maybe 4.
Now back to the DMV to submit the paperwork to be official.

After the Shark Tuner thing is all ironed out and am sure everything operating like it should on the GTS (315 rwhp), planning to put some more aggressive cams in. That should make around 380 rwhp without losing any reliability or needing to upgrade anything else to handle the power. The 928 can handle up to 500 crank hp before the drivetrain starts having reliability problems.
