There was a great battle in the Sunday race between Bruce Canepa (white #12) and Johannes van Overbeek (Coca Cola #5). They ran away from the field. Eventually van Overbeek faded with a puncture. And then Canepa backed it into the turn 11 (hairpin before the main straight) tirewall, suffering some cosmetic bodywork damage to the right rear. Someone else who was in 3rd place suffered mechanical issues. And Rusty French in the black 935 took the win.

As I remember ( I was in the tower at the S/F line) Canepa went out first, a couple laps at least before the 5 got the puncture - and French was charging hard before either went down.
It was very cool to see that black car gaining each time it went by.
A very well deserved win.
