Back in the olden days when I was dating almost everyone smoked in the bars. I quickly learned if you meet a girl in a bar she will want to go back, a lot. All the chicks at bars were professional drinkers, not social drinkers.

I would go for several months at a time with no real social life because I got into another hobby that had few if any women. Astronomy, model airplanes, computers, cars, and so many of my hobbies had almost no females. I counted once and came up with 18 hobbies.

Chasing women is the most expensive of all the hobbies. It was real easy to blow a year's tire budget for autocrossing on a few dates, and I am NOT talking about hookers.

I dated a lot of very different women. From the earth mother new age hippy types, school teachers, veterinarians, and scientific researchers. I learned I wanted an smart woman that could understand the world around them. A lady that can actually understand algebra, computers and carry on a conversation about something other the fashion or TV shows and movie stars.

The advice everyone tells you is to "be yourself" and that was what I was most puzzled by. How can I be anything but myself?

I finally understood that is means answer the questions honestly. If a girl asks if you like something or how you see things don't just try to tell them what you think they want to hear. You don't have to say RAP music sucks balls even though it does just let them know you don't want to go to see a RAP concert.
I understand the advice about being myself, and that is exactly why I don't want to go to the bar to meet someone.

It's hard when there are few women in my hobbies and I feel if I am myself that they won't like me but then I realize that it is better that way since I need to find someone that likes me for who I am. So I don't want to waste time with someone I won't get along with.

Bars blow. If you're going someplace where you might meet some people (girls), at least make it a place (or activity) where you'd enjoy going even without the people (girls).

That is part of the problem. I feel that I am fundamentally different from the vast majority of the college population.
Different is good. No drink, no smoke. You will go far

i often wonder who is lurking on this thread....

anyway, my advice on life: live it. when given opposing choices, the hardest one is usually the right one. regarding women, you better figure out what you want and not settle.

YMMV.

back to smoking a pork shoulder roast. its gonna be good. i finally went to the dark side and got an electric brinkmann. i bet that thing saves me $20 every time i use it, vs. charcoal. plus i don't have to futz with the temp.

I think I might grill some Italian sausages after work today. Add some peppers and caramelized onions, on a fresh roll...mmmmmmm

I like being different but it makes it dang hard to find someone I have enough in common with to be happy with for the rest of my life. I know opposites attract, but that can only go so far. I know there must at least be some similarity in level of education and things like love of nature and such.

Yeah, especially when the thread turns toward my personal life. But whatever. I have no problem with having those things out in the open. It can help me sort out my own thoughts.

I knew that all my activities seemed to have all men. I figured I needed to reverse that trend and try something that had a lot of women. I started going to a folk art dance club. I did not really care to dance, but the ratio of women to men was 10 to one. Once they knew I was single I was busy all the time. It is good excersize and the dancers were all in good shape, even the old cougars. And not one of them smoked.

Hmm. Interesting. I'll think about what I can find out here that would be like that.

And at some point, you'll start to enjoy a drink just for the taste of it, itself. Instead of craving an ice-cold Coca Cola or glass of lemonade on a hot day, you might crave a certain beer. Drinking isn't just about getting drunk/buzzed. But if you don't like that stuff, that's fine, too.

If you're not willing/interested in going out of your way to meet chicks and just want to find those who are interested in what interests you, you can follow that direction, too. I used to bike a lot in grad school. OK, so maybe I didn't meet so many girls out climbing the fireroads in the foothills of Pasadena. But I certainly had the opportunity to meet random chicks riding my bike on the bike path between the Palisades and Palos Verdes. (Middle of the week was best.) They were out riding bikes and roller blading, too. If you want a chick who races cars, well, you're largely out of luck. But heck, show up at autocrosses or PCA events and see what happens. Unless you serendipidously assist some stranded female motorist on the side of Mul ( a la Joe), you're not likely to pick up any chicks strafing the corners of the hills of the 'bu with your dad riding shotgun.

There are some goofy folk dances in this world. The instructor would pick a country and we would do the dances from different areas. Once you get over the shyness of dancing in public it is interesting to meet people from all walks of life.

I've so far never liked the smell of beer so I don't think I'd care for the taste.

I don't car if the girl races cars or likes cars as long as she is ok with me spending lots of time with cars. She should like riding with me in them, though.

I'll admit that Regan is pretty cute, though.

I would like to meet a girl who cycles.

My Dad will enjoy the day when I have a job and pay the registration on the 911 myself as I will. He is a very nervous passenger, but it seems to be mostly on the Snake on weekends. When we went out on the Thursday 4 weeks ago he had lots of fun and we were going downhill much faster than on the weekends. We weren't going anywhere near the limit, it is just on the weekends he is so nervous that I have to slow way down.

You're in college. It's a bit of a different time. For all you know, that cute blond girl with blue eyes you've told us about goes to the local bar once in awhile, too. Not necessarily to get hammered and pick up guys. But because she wants to hang out with her friends and someone in the group suggested they stop off at a bar. But you'd never know that, unless you actually bump into her at said watering hole. Or maybe she and her friends just wanted to get something to eat, and that's the reason they're there. Or maybe she just tends bar there as a job to help pay her way through school.

Point is, I understand your reluctance to involve yourself in the bar scene. But sometimes people go to a bar for reasons other than (personal) intoxication.

Ok. Boris has full on crazies...
It's the worst iv'e seen in a long time

Runs inside, rushes up the stairs, spends 3 minutes miauwing and making all kinds of weird noises upstairs all by himself..

then runs down, nearly unhinges the catflap on his way out... runs full WOT to the back of the garden, in a wide zigzag , climbs halway up the tree and then stops to sharpen his claws, while he's hanging on the tree with his claws

Like wtf dude. All that, without catnip.. i can't imagine what he would do if he ever did get catnip...

I should have expanded on my statement. I understand that people drink without getting drunk, but the only bar I liked being in was Enrique's and that's gone now. (It's a long story). But that was a different kind of bar. Porsche stuff all over, and my Dad has known Henry for a long time because of the Porsches. And it was a block from my house. We could go there for dinner with my mom. Even then I did not like it when it was busy. Loud conversations and such.

The thing with the blue eyed girl is funny since I never even thought about talking to her until the subject came up on this thread. I am not getting my hopes up of anything happening between us. Yes, I realize she is probably like other students and goes to the bar occasionally.

I really should go on walkabout (or rideabout?). After I finish school.
