two words, one product: white lightning. the best chain lube, ever. cleans the chain, lubes the chain, and is self cleaning between maintenance. take your chain off, heat some cheap vegetable oil in a pan you don't care about (the thrift store is the ticket) and drop your chain in there. while it is cleaning on the stove (yeah, you heat it pretty hot), clean all your spockets, really good. when the chain looks good and clean, remove it from the oil and take it outside for a good blasting with some brake cleaner. put the chain back on, lube it up with white lightning and you are good to go.

oil lube will kill your chain because it picks up debris and grit. white lightning sheds that debris and grit as you go. after lubing once, reapplications periodically is all you need.

Thanks for the suggestion but it is better now that I have cleaned the rear derailer idler sprockets of the gunk and ridden it a little more.

I tried the white lightning and did not like how it was too solid like teflon and seemed to gum stuff up. I like tri-flow and use that on my bike in TO but here in SLO the bike store carried and recommended CHAIN-L so I am using that. It is a lot more viscous than the tri-flow. More like honey. Smelly honey. ;) It stinks so it must be good! :) I like the more oily stuff and just reapply it more often. But I could see this stuff holding dirt more than tri-flow or solid lubricant.

My chain and sprockets are probably worn out anyway and this bike was free so I don't really want to put too much time into it. I would rather make or buy a bike that is more to my liking as far as frame and suspension design.

You're worrying about a little mud from doing a little mountain biking in the mud? Isn't that what mountain biking is all about?

Just wipe down the chain with WD-40 and then apply lube.

Well, it was not smart to be wearing my clean clothes at least. I didn't really mind getting the mud on me, just that my shirt is probably stained now. It was my light blue solidworks shirt.

And Joe, goodness, if you have a heart attack with me just accepting, doesn't give me much confidence for the honeymoon night. So I guess I'll pass...

Yowza. That's gotta hurt, Joe.

What does it matter where we're meeting? You're not traveling anywhere, anyway.

Got it. There's a time and place for everything. Sounds like you got carried away riding a muddy trail in nice clothes. It was still fun, though, wasn't it?

porsche4life 04-26-2012 03:15 PM

I'm not traveling anywhere? I'm going to be on the road all year buddy... Starting with a flight to SD in 16 days..... Then driving from SD to Houston....

Flieger 04-26-2012 03:15 PM

It was only a short trail. It would be more fun with either fenders or goggles. :D

OK, you never travel anywhere anytime I invite you. Throw in a pair of boobs, and suddenly you might change your mind though, huh?

porsche4life 04-26-2012 03:23 PM

Hey look, the doc finally figured out the male psyche! ;)

tweezers74 04-26-2012 03:33 PM

I hope you guys don't think I am kidding... Let's do it! It will be fun! so glen and Sidney seem serious... Who else?

Noah930 04-26-2012 03:33 PM

Listen, we've got boobs all over the place here in the office.

tweezers74 04-26-2012 03:37 PM

Ok, Noah's out. Sid and glen and me are in. Who else?

porsche4life 04-26-2012 03:37 PM

Doc, boobs hanging on the wall aren't near as fun.....

I say we go for OK, its the central location.... We can go to the east half of the state for good roads, and I know where we can shoot some spoons out here in the west...

tweezers74 04-26-2012 03:40 PM

Ok, Sidney, then Noah was right. You don't travel. ;)

porsche4life 04-26-2012 03:41 PM

Well... OK is the halfway for the west and east guys to meet....

And there are 3 of us here already....

Noah930 04-26-2012 03:41 PM

If you think going to OK is some sort of vacation destination, you need a better travel agent.

porsche4life 04-26-2012 03:42 PM

I didn't say that at all... Just that it was a central location....

Noah930 04-26-2012 03:43 PM

You know I'm just teasing, right?

Yes, OK would make the most sense for a Stijn soiree. Well, except for Stijn, himself. He's screwed no matter where gets chosen in the USA.

porsche4life 04-26-2012 03:44 PM

And like I said, I know where we could shoot some long range spoons..... ;)
