I have been lucky on the job front.

I got my first job sitting in math class as a junior in high school. I was taking all the pictures for the school yearbook and printing them in my home darkroom. The only photos I could not take were the things going on while I was actually in class. The professional photographer that shot them hired me to consolidate his competition. He whispered in my ear "if you want a job come see me after school". I started working for him after school and on Saturday until I graduated and then went full time.

After 6 years I asked for $12,000 per year and he would not pay that. I gave him two weeks notice and started trying to figure out what to do for a job. On July 1st 1978 I drove 888 miles to Oklahoma City to look for a job. I grabbed the phone book and made a list of professional photo labs. On Monday the 3rd I went to the first place on my list and got hired. I went looking for an apartment and found one that day and rented it.

On the 4th of July I stuck around and celebrated the holiday with relatives. On the 5th I drove 888 miles back to Montgomery Alabama, loaded all my possessions in small U-haul trailer hooked it to the 914 and drove 888 miles back to OKC.

I was unemployed for 4 working days total.

I was so broke I ate a lot of rice. The reason I picked OKC as a place to look for a job was my grandparents on both sides lived here. I knew I could go hang out over there on Sunday afternoon and hear the question "can you stay for supper Glen" The answer was always YES!

I did not know anyone in town except my grandparents, and my co-workers.

Yea, I had a trailer hitch that I used to pull my autocross trailer. I was into being real competitive back then so I had 4 sticky tires that I hauled to each autocross. I had to leave that trailer behind but when my parents moved to OKC to retire they hauled it up here for me. It was a trailer big enough for 4 tires only. The tools and an ice chest were in the trunks.

The poor 914 struggled to pull the u-haul. Back in those days the speed limit was 55 so I was not a road hazard. I had to drive in 4th gear.

nynor 12-11-2012 03:21 PM

glen, do you have a coffee grinder?

GH85Carrera 12-11-2012 03:24 PM

Nope. It is a very rare event to brew coffee at home. Mrs Carrera does not drink coffee. I just have my Folger's at work and do without on weekends unless we go to breakfast somewhere.

nynor 12-11-2012 03:26 PM

noted.

GH85Carrera 12-11-2012 03:31 PM

If you were contemplating sending me coffee please don't bother. It would be like sending expensive wine to a street drunk. I have tried fancy coffee at friends houses several times and always wish I had my Folger's instead. I appreciate the thought but I will just re-gift it.

Arrrg! I hate meetings where you have to fight to stay awake. I had to force myself to participate just to stop nodding off. Stupid chairperson needs to lose the monotone voice and some more practice - clearly out of comfort zone.

Porsche-poor 12-11-2012 04:05 PM

Nice one.
