How'd the day go?

Rick V 01-21-2013 04:01 PM

It went better than expected, instead of firing the waste of flesh the boss has decided to try and work him to death. It is so funny to watch

okay, question for rick and anyone else that wants to answer:

the donut gasket that i replaced on my wife's subie a couple of weeks back, exactly like this one 1998 Subaru Forester Exhaust Gasket - Exhaust - Bosal 98 Forester Exhaust Gasket - 345-05018543 - ********* has a small exhaust leak. i thought that it would seal itself, being that the joint is spring loaded and the gasket seemed fairly compressible.

what do i need to do to get the thing sealed properly? another new gasket?

Like Rick said
Make sure you've removed all of the old gasket. It has a tendency to stick to the pipe. Had the same problem with my tacoma and on the second try i found piece of the old gasket still stuck to the front pipe where I couldn't see it.

D replace the gasket with a new one and make sure both flanges are smooth as a babies bottom, also replace the springs with new ones if you didn't the first time.

Jeff, thanks

yep, new springs. i will do as you suggest.

i am thinking that this is the problem. the old gasket was really hard to get off and crumbling. a total pain in the arse.

does anyone know what the gasket is made of? it looked like a weave of steel wire and coated with another shiny metal.

Rick V 01-21-2013 04:21 PM

Steal weave and lead, I believe there might be another soft metal in there as well

nynor 01-21-2013 04:31 PM

lead. great. i had a major exposure, if that is true.

Outback Porsche 01-21-2013 05:02 PM

I wouldn't worry about it D. I'm exposed to lead every day, and look at me ;)

porsche4life 01-21-2013 05:03 PM

Major exposure?

Rick V 01-21-2013 05:05 PM

Like I said I think it is lead, may be something else.

nynor 01-21-2013 05:06 PM

well, i was right under the thing and using a screwdriver to peel the stuff off and dust everywhere. if i'f been thinking, i'd have put some kind of mask on. i'd call that a major exposure.

porsche4life 01-21-2013 05:07 PM
