Damn, I could have a mix of 3.0 and 3.2 cilinders......
Three of them have a head gasket, three do not....
If the groove for the head gasket was not made in the original cilinder, I will probably have a mix of different types.....
Need to check part numbers tomorrow....

what do you mean, either you have a set with , or without a cyllinder head gasket... no matter what the PN's are, it's not a set if it's half/half.

are you talking your old, or your new cyllinders ??

I have only one set, the one that came of my engine.
cil 1,2 and 3 have a groove and a head gasket.
4, 5 and 6 do not.
If the PO had the originals machined so he could install a head gasket, then all I have to do is have the other three machined also.
In the worse case, they replaced 3 original cilinders with cilinders of a 3.0 litre.
It sounds plausible to me since those are also 95mm.
Are all 3.0 litre cilinders Alusil???

If I have to buy new P and C's, I'm going 3.4 but that would be a huge bite out of my budget...

no not all 30 was alusil, some where nikasil.
check with a magnet. Alusil is non magnetic

Markings should be different, Nikasil normally would be be Mahle,
Alusil probably Kolbenschmidt (KB mark)

I would really find it odd if they mixed Alusil and Nikasil, they need different Piston rings and all that...

Really weird to have different sets, check the numbers, see if it's the original set that was machined, or if somebody replaced a couple of barrels (meaning the thing at one point in it's life self destructed)

Didn't Mahle make Alusil as well???? I thought they did. I know that for the 3.0 litre is is never sure what you have, could be Alusil, could be Nikasil....

I'll have to check the cilinders tomorrow when I come back from work.

keep my fingers crossed.

I would have a good excuse to 3.4 after all but my wallet would cry....

factory 911's that used Alusil were KB cyllinders, shop manual even describes how to spot which is which, Nikasil = Mahle, Alusil = KB.

They all have a yellowish shine, so I'm guessing Nikalsil....
But I'll double check tomorrow.

Well are you keeping it on the street? I mean there isn't a lot to get here... Pull out everything you deem non-essential.....

yeah, i'll be keeping it (quasi) street legal and driving it every day when it is warm. trust me, i don't care how loud, bumpy, or otherwise ridiculous others may find it. this car is my hot-rod and the harsher, noisier, and faster the better.

i guess the advice i am digging for is how to get stuff off, like the sound proofing, etc. do i need chemicals or a heat gun?

Okay D, after you have removed the seats and carpet you will need to go after the sound deadening cement that is all over the floorboards. There are a number of ways to do this, I like a grinder with a wire wheel, although it makes a very big mess, then install race seats. Remove the sunroof, that panel and mechanism weighs a ton and is very high up. AC...............gone, completely, radio, yeah lose that too. In other words if it doesn't make it go, turn or stop get rid of it. It all depends on just how rude you wanna make it. You can lighten the car a whole lot, like be prepared to have to lower it when you are done.

well (and here i start to sound like a pussy) i kinda want to keep the radio. however, i am deaf in one ear and can't discern stereo, so i'll only be keeping the speakers in the doors. i never use the AC anyway (not so pussy, i can take the heat), so eventually i'll get the delete bracket and pull that sumbich out.

a wire wheel on the cement? now, that sounds like work. and messy. i'll just start pulling schit and see what happens. first autocross is march 28th, so i'd like to have a good start on this project. i'll running an entirely different class this year. two firsts and a second for 'F' class, so far.

i have a turbo back 3 inch exhaust to install, no cat. i also have race rubber. i have already done some minor mods to the suspension. i am going to get a 951max chip and a new blow off valve. the head is ported and O-ringed. time to get fkn krazee.

With a 3 inch no cat back exhaust, do yourself a favor, lose the stereo. Unless you have one like I have in Peggy you won't hear it anyway.

LOL!

i bought the exhaust used and the PO told me that it wasn't that loud. he only got rid of it in order to pass inspection. being that they NEVER check and these cars should pass without a cat, i took that statement with a grain of salt. i'll let you know how loud it is. it does have a muffler.... does that count?

p.s. i got the exhaust for a song: $150, stainless.

yeah, i kinda felt like i stole it.

but....

the guy had a 951 he was trying to sell for $18k (under 30k original miles and very very well optioned). his house was enormous. he had a SCCA open wheel racer in the garage and a schit ton of trophy's. he wasn't hurting and he knew what he had. i was grateful for the deal. he treated me well and was a gentleman.
