Not sure if gas or electric is heavier any more with the new lighter lithium batteries. Back in the day batteries were heavy. In most of the online videos I see of larger electric planes they fly like they look heavy to me.

From the digging I've done, you get about 60%longer run time on a tank of gas than on similar weight batteries and a tank can be filled in minutes while lipo batteries take around an hour to charge.
So, vibration shouldn't really be an issue? I've not played with rc nitro engines, I'm told they're pretty well counter balanced, but it seems like they'd be a bit rough regardless

Good morning folks.

Another busy day at the office.

We will have to keep an eye on the radar. The forecast for today is more of yesterday's weather. We usually get a day or more to get ready.

RKDinOKC 05-20-2013 06:49 AM

Nope, vibration is not an issue. The engine is balanced and the prop should be also. Without them being balanced the plane wouldn't last very long.

Took me a long time to learn to fly my 4 channel helis because the charge time is soo loong compared to the 5 minute fight time. Still consider myself a novice, on second level, fixed pitch rotor and flybar. My last r/c plane (over 10 years ago) had a supercharged nitro 4 stroke .5 cuin engine, making 1.5 hp.

Be sure of the servo size requirements. Bigger wings mean larger control surfaces mean more torque necessary to keep them positioned.

Morning all. Off to w*** then to take Connor to a concert tonight.

HHI944 05-20-2013 06:58 AM

That was what I though. Just have to figure out repositioning the muffler. I'm not 100% sure I'll be ok on 4 servos. I might have to split the ailerons into 2 servos, v tail on one with a Y connector, rudder and petrol. ...my rx is good to 7 or 8 servos and my 4ch tx is programmable for seperate aileron servos and for seperate servos on the v tail if I decide to delete the rudder

It looked like you had fun, I don't know when I'll snowboard again. I'm rather envious. :)

I'm very busy at work at the moment and I'll be glad when it quiets down. Other than that not much is happening, just cruising along really.

What concert are you off to see?

Sounds like you have plenty going on Jeff. I m envious of you. I haven't gone camping in quite some time so all your adventures sound very fun. I want to take the boys but it is hard with just me. I will figure it out.

I did have a great time. Weather and snow have been great. I have snowboarded the best I ever have. Met some guys up here and they really pushed me. Told me my skills were way beyond what I was doing. So I did push myself and had a blast. Although I went yesterday with my girlfriend and she always grabs me when we get off the chairlift. Fell yesterday with her and I think I twisted my knee up. I am going to be limping around today...

I am going to Vampire Weekend at Red Rocks. So excited. The are kind of an indie college sounding group. Chill. Will be a good concert. Of Monsters and Men are also playing with them. Good group as well. Can't wait!

Wasn't as brave as Glen. My house doesn't have a good fraidy hole spot. When it looked like it was going to be within a couple of miles of my house, I bugged out and went to go pick up some dinner in a direction perpendicular to the storm path. Left 10 minutes ahead of the storm and got back after it had passed.

A niece and her family live 2 miles north of here where the tarnaidy touched down. Her neighbor across the street north of her lost part of their roof, her house was untouched. i imagine they will be installing a fraidy hole.

Tornados scare the crap out of me. Earthquakes too. AZ has nothing like that.

Good news about the foot, Richard. Keep your eye on the prize and it will be here in no time.

RKDinOKC 05-20-2013 07:54 AM

A day or two is just not long enough for me to dig and stock a fraidy hole and no, I do not live in a dugout or have a root OR wine cellar.

Personally not a fan of ARFs. Will not be fun converting a pre-built plane from electric to nitro.

i don't think i could work at a brewery at my age, unless i had a desk job. the work is too physically demanding for my broken body and back. some of the hoses i was dragging around easily topped 100lbs, and that was the easy work. plus the chemicals we used were really harsh. there is a good chance i could get mesothelioma in 20 years or so, from the diatomaceous earth. plus, getting burns from NaOH just sucks.

that said, i think it is work i'd enjoy. i'll be auditing medical charts and doing research. i love that kind of thing, believe it or not. i'll have to wear a tie to work, i am betting, but i've been trying to adjust the sails for a long time.

Yeah, I know it'll be a pain, but less work than building something with that kind of size from scratch. That's why I mentioned deleting the rudder and using the elevators on 2 servos as both elevators and rudders. I think killing the rudder will simplify the conversion

The weather men were off again. Yesterday they said the thunderstorms would hit the metro at 3:00 PM. It is just 2:30 and the storms are here. I decided to pull my El Camino inside to avoid any hail today. So far just rain, thunder and a few bits of tiny hail.

GH85Carrera 05-20-2013 01:21 PM

There is a very big bad ass tornado tearing up the south side of the city. It is following the path of the big storm from May 3rd 1999. Houses are being destroyed.

It is bad pookie down there.

porsche4life 05-20-2013 01:52 PM

This damage is looking worse than May 3rd.... Lots of major buildings wiped off the earth, scarred earth... Insane amount of damage...

pete3799 05-20-2013 01:52 PM

Keep your head down Glen.
