yup......7mm Rem Mag

nynor 01-04-2014 02:55 PM

ammunition is dear. are you going to reload?

Rick V 01-04-2014 02:56 PM

Yeah I plan on doing my own loads. $34 for 20 150gr soft points. I did buy a box of shelf stuff just to sight the scope in

Savage 16 with jeweled bolt, acu-trigger, bedded, Nikon 3X9X40 (soon to be sold) and a crappy cell phone picture

speaking of reloading, i have a few hundred cases that need prepping.... i guess i may as well get started.

nynor 01-04-2014 03:05 PM

i love my nikon buckmaster. the glass is simply awesome. i think it is 4.5 - 14.

nice rifle. i think the savage stuff is good quality, especially for the $$$. very clean, no nonsense lines, too.

Rick V 01-04-2014 03:14 PM

I like Nikon but I am thinking 4X12. The 3X9 is just not going to cut it way out there

nynor 01-04-2014 03:19 PM

what i've found is that my scope at 14X is pretty much maxed out at 600 yards, shooting a torso sized silhouette. the range has 11" plates at 700 and 800 yards, but i can barely see them with the scope.

i'd like to get another nikon with more magnification, as i believe my .308 is capable of 700 yards and beyond.

Rick V 01-04-2014 03:22 PM

So I guess I should go beyond 14X. I am planning on this being the 1K meter play toy. I am going to have a break out on it.

nynor 01-04-2014 03:26 PM

i am no expert, but at 14X i truly believe the optics are, more or less, maxed out at 600 yards. this video pretty much describes my experience with the nikon scope that i have. i found that 600 yards, i have to put the target on the bottom post of the reticle:

Yeah that is why I didn't want an 06 or a 308, there is way too much bullet drop. I will sacrifice a little in mass for added speed and a flatter trajectory.

nynor 01-04-2014 03:45 PM

what i meant to say, is that i really like the scope and its function.

also, i think you'll find that ballistics out to 500 yards are about 35 to 50 inches of bullet drop for your rifle. for mine it is in the neighborhood of 45 to 65 inches of drop.

30.06 is right in the middle, which is what i'd expect.

GH85Carrera 01-04-2014 03:54 PM

I hate it when my bullet drops.

Outback Porsche 01-04-2014 03:57 PM

Morning.

Lovely Sunday, low 30s. Gotta get out in the yard and do some weeding with the roundup while its not so hot.

Rick V 01-04-2014 03:57 PM

I drop a bomb at least once a day

Hehe. The 46 we had on Thursday was a bit 'ordinary'. The following day was only 39 and everyone I bumped into was commenting on how cool it was. I never thought I'd ever hear that 39C was a cool day. :)
