Funny thing is that most of the junk now at Wally World sounds as good as the high dollar stuff in the 80's. Part of the electronics revolution of the early 80's is the higher quality circuitry just got a lot cheaper.
There was also a big hubub in the early 90's when everything went digital (distribution driven). The signal to noise of digital is much better, but analog can push the dynamic range farther. The founder of the company I work for was the recordist for our local symphony for 25 years. He had custom 1/2 inch tape equipment to insure the highest quality. I put together the system used to digitize all those 25 years of recordings. Part of the problem of going to digital recording was the limit of the dynamic range of the recording equipment. If the orchestra's volume got higher than the 100db limit it would clip, had to use 3 recorders set at different max levels and use the highest level recording that didn't get clipped. So I guess you can say that modern recordings of live performances are not as much like being there as using the older analog technology. There is a huge difference between a solo instrument playing pianissimo and the full orchestra play fortissimo. Studio mixed stuff just doesn't make that much difference. Yeah, surround sound is cool and makes a huge difference. Surround encoding has been in the sound track of movies since 1972. I went to one of the first presentations of surround at a local high end stereo shop. As everyone was assembling in the small theater they were playing music with surround on. The presenter walked in and turned off the surround. There was a very audible awww from the crowd. The guy said. "You just went aww to an $80,000 stereo system because I turned off this $300 surround sound processor." That was pretty impressive. Everyone's ears and tastes are different. For many the cheap stuff is fine, others are annoyed because something just doesn't sound right. If you listen to something on your system that builds musically and the hair on the back of your neck stands up, that is all the quality you need. I have a Pioneer Elite Receiver that I run everything through because it has white noise level setting for the surround, does dolby pro and THX and has digital audio inputs. It is going to be expensive to upgrade when I go to HD cause it switches my video sources too and to old to do HDMI. I still have my old 2 channel 360 watt amp with .001% distortion, and KV-360. It is a solid state amp designed by the guy that designed the McIntosh tube stuff, AP Vanmeter, and is as good as anything out there. It's collecting dust because the Pioneer Elite with 100watts/channel drives everything in my system just fine.

I have a pair of vintage 70's Utah speakers. JBL center and RSL rears.

Morning, guys!
Amazing. Among all the large oil companies, is Walmart the worlds biggest company with over 2 million employees.

I remember those Utah speakers, I used them in a custom restaurant install I did in college. Made boxes for them and hung them from the rafters just above the grills in the dropped ceiling. Positioned and wired them with volume controls so you could control the volume in each of several different area's of the dining room. Sounded great and I did it all with just one amp. A guy came in and bought the tough portable speaker/enclosure I had made for the food prep room from the restaurant owner. A month later he was selling the same speaker for the area behind the seat of pickup trucks. His company is now called Kicker.
Somebody has to do all that price roll back. My nephew's father-in-law's company makes products that sell at Walmart. Says it takes 50 employees to deal with them. And also made the comment that Walmart comes in and tells you what they will buy your product for. If you can't sell it for that, they just drop your product. Companies end up cheapening their products to be able to meet Walmart's price points and stay in business. He had to move his manufacturing to China. Says he knocked off his own stuff. In my opinion that practice encourages and makes the products Walmart sells cheap junk. My favorite example is light bulbs. Same brand at Walmart and Home Depot. Walmart's cost less but only last about a month, Home Depot's last 3 months longer. I bet Home Depot and Walmart are making the same per item markup. It is getting more and more difficult to find quality stuff that is just a plain old fashion good value. Probably won't be too long before the bulbs at Home Depot don't last any longer than the Walmart bulbs.

Back in 1972 I wanted to establish some credit. I borrowed a grand from a bank to buy my perfect stereo system. It was a quadraphonic system. At that time 8 track was clearly better than cassettes so I went 8 track & turntable. Quadraphonic was the precursor to today’s surround sound system. There were only a few records or 8 track tapes made in discrete quadraphonic. Most stuff was just stereo with some added processing to fake the quad sound. I used that system until the early 90s. The amp is up in my attic still. It is probably 3 feet wide and made of wood. Way bigger than standard component size stuff. It was 200 watts per channel x 4 channels. I had Advent speakers that flat out pumped their guts out.
Just a year later I bought a brand new 1973 Super Bug for $2,700. So my stereo was about 40% of the cost of a cheap car. I guess that would be like a $8,000 stereo today.
