Hey Brent, I have a question about Windows Remote desktop. First off, is it really any good. We have never tried it. I know it can't be as easy as Team Viewer, but they want lots of money for commercial used on Team Viewer. All we need to do is see the RAID drives of my system and my partner's three RAIDS. And to copy and move files on the systems. I will have my system with one RAID and he will have the the new 37TB RAID. It seems silly in 2020 to drive back and forth between houses to get a few files, or see if we have them duplicated and can delete one or the other.

File management gets to be a pain in the butt when we are over 50 TB of data.

Yes the Kodak plug-in is still available, but it is still 32bit and you have to open photoshop in 32 bit mode to be able to use it. That is no longer possible on the newest mac system.

I use Remote Desktop to access my user login on several PC boxes at work. But none of them are data stores. They are boxes like Active Directory master.

RDP works fine if you have a connection to the other system. Years ago I used Hamachi to access mom's here in WI when I lived in CA. I think they went paid now.

Really all you need is a VPN connection to the machine you want to connect to if you are going across the internet.

I use RDP on my computer at home, my work laptop and my phone all with a Sophos VPN connection and have never had any issues.

If you don't have a VPN, check Zoho or OpenVPN. You are looking for a traditional VPN, not the ones that route you to other places to fool Netflix or whatever.

Howtogeek has a good primer and might have everything you need, including using Windows for your VPN. Your Router may have that capability as well.

Looks like Hamachi is free again for up to 5 computers.

Pricing

Hamachi is free for up to 5 computers in your network. If you run Hamachi as a service in unattended mode, you can choose from our subscription packages below.

We changed VPN from Cisco to Merkat due to cost. Cisco was tunneled Merkat is not. That means Cisco only routed traffic that went to the IPs on the VPN thru the VPN. Merkat routes all traffic thru the VPN when you turn it on. That means my computer routes thru the company network to surf the internet if using the VPN. Not very practicle. And I don't like work being able to log ALL of my internet traffic while using the VPN. Not that I am surfing porn or anything like that, I just think it's a huge privacy issue for my home computer.

Wow, their web domain is vpn.com. They have had that a while, or they paid a lot for it.

We mostly want to be able to see the files on each other's RAIDs.

Aloha, y’all. We’re chilling on a beach, watching the sea turtles. They’re not quite sure whether to stay in the shallow water or venture ashore. Either way sounds good to me. Mahalo.

I'm doing pretty much the same Jim.
No.... wait ......i've been plowing snow for 12 hours. Almost the same thing.

Jim Richards 12-17-2019 03:59 PM

What is snow?

Jim Richards 12-17-2019 04:00 PM

Sorry, Pete. All the best to you.

Golly that sounds like fun!

I saw one snowflake on Monday. That is enough snow for me this year, and even all winter. If I want to see snow, I will go visit it up in the mountains where it should stay.

Porsche-poor 12-18-2019 06:59 AM

Moring all.

I'm with you Glen. Snowflakes should stay in the mountains.

We had no snow, but it was 4*f this morning. The nice thing is that I am out of room in the fridge and the food for the work Christmas potluck was safe to put in the car outside overnight.

RKDinOKC 12-18-2019 04:17 PM

Dang it, fourth trip to fix my fridge. Now the freezer is holding -10 below zero, but the fridge, 52°F is as cold as it is getting. All that was wrong is a fan's bearings were going out. New fan, but now the fridge part is not getting cold. Do not want to have to buy a new refridgerator!

GH85Carrera 12-19-2019 06:12 AM

Maybe you need a new refrigerator repair man that really knows his stuff. It could be something as simple as the temperature thermistor is bad.

Almost everything I have a professional repairman work on I hear "well I have never seen THAT before" and is is never something positive. Sometimes I get to hear it twice on one project!

flipper35 12-19-2019 06:26 AM

Is it the Maytag guy? He never did anything but sit at the office.

I don't know who the good appliance repair folks are. Very few repair shops and zillions of different appliances, with a millions different parts. So many people just toss out the old and buy new the repair folks have it tough.

Porsche-poor 12-19-2019 06:52 AM

Moring all. Off to go play with Iso's.
