HBD to livi!

Is he still around here? This place is hopeless. Or something like that.

Porsche-poor 01-23-2023 07:06 AM

Morning all. Another non-eventful weekend here in WA.

GH85Carrera 01-23-2023 07:42 AM

I am scanning movies like crazy. The good news is it does it's thing next to me as i sit here in front of my computer. One occasions that I don't understand for some reason the take-up spool stops, and film starts to pile up. Just a nudge and the reel starts going again, and all is OK. So I can't really just let it alone. So big deal when I am sitting here anyway.

flipper35 01-23-2023 12:19 PM

At least it is babysitting and not actively fitting each frame!

GH85Carrera 01-23-2023 01:34 PM

Yea, that would take the rest of my life, to scan each frame one at a time.

It does it at about two frames per second. The only time it has any problems on the takeup is on the large 7 inch rolls of film. After about 1/2 way it will stop taking it up at random times. Just give it a push and on it goes.

The supply side has no motor at all, and it really would benefit with a few posts to wind the film through and a little bit of a brake or drag. It just freewheels and almost too freely. I did a film this morning that is just under 27 minutes with several rolls of film my parents spliced together. It amazes me the tape is still good after all the years.

It uploads to YouTube fairly fast with my upload speeds. YouTube then has to "process" it and check for copyright issues, and if it is OK for other issues. Then it finishes processing in the background. The long movie took 45 minutes for YouTube to do it's thing. For free, I guess it is a good enough deal.

GH85Carrera 01-24-2023 07:22 AM

Only a few more days of this, and I may be done scanning!
Then on to editing them.

We are expecting a big snow storm today. Right now it is just rain, but we are supposed to have a lot (3-6 inches) of wet snow. It is supposed to be in above freezing for most of that, but enough snow will bring the temps down.

We shall see. I have a good stock of beer and food, and we just had the trash and recycling picked up, and we put the wheelie bins back away. I don't expect to go out again any time soon.

Porsche-poor 01-24-2023 07:24 AM

Morning all. Well I hope you stay warm and snow free.

GH85Carrera 01-24-2023 07:46 AM

It is snowing rather heavily right now. The ground is starting to turn white outside. No change inside!

Porsche-poor 01-24-2023 09:12 AM

well do not be sending that crap back this way!

GH85Carrera 01-24-2023 10:18 AM

Nope, the folks in Texas sent it to us, we are just passing it on to Missouri, and points up north to the great lakes and likely Pete. Pete is used to snow, so no big deal up there.

GH85Carrera 01-25-2023 07:05 AM

After a day of snow at 33 degrees the streets are wet, and nothing more. The grass has snow, but it is supposed to be mid 40s and sunny today so it will be gone soon. We got some nice moisture and it all soaked into the ground, and a little extra nitrogen to help the plants grow.

I am scanning a full 7 inch reel of 8mm film, likely 30 minutes of movie total. My mom's handwriting labels it as "parades" and so far, just parades. It looks like Pearl City, HI is the beginning of it. Likely to see major parades like the one through San Marcos, TX and the 4th of July parade in Midwest City, OK or through parts of Montgomery, AL. Sure to be award winning stuff.

Porsche-poor 01-25-2023 07:38 AM

Morning all. Not much going on here. Work work and more work.

GH85Carrera 01-25-2023 09:58 AM

I almost just skipped the film called Parades. I figure it is just time and a little bit of electricity, so why not scan it. The parades are boring but then is got to some stuff my dad shot when he was in some south pacific islands. I think some of it is Pago Pago in the 1960s. Maybe some is Soul South Korea. I will have to watch the finished scan to learn more. As it scans, I see frame by frame on a screen that is 3.5 inches wide. Anyway, better than another parade. I don't remember seeing this one before as a kid.

flipper35 01-25-2023 10:08 AM

Snow here as well. Glen, might as well digitize everything, you never know.

Porsche-poor 01-25-2023 11:24 AM

Never know what you will find going thru stuff your parents collected.

GH85Carrera 01-25-2023 01:24 PM

Yep, some weird stuff was film-worthy. And it was expensive to shoot film, and wait until Kodak processed it, and sent it back.

GH85Carrera 01-25-2023 02:17 PM

Welp, 16.7 gigabytes of scanning is done, uploaded and on YouTube. All if it is marked and unlisted, except for two of them that have my great grandmother in it, and glimpses of my grandparents, but the rest of the people are just distant cousins, and I don't know how to contact them. All the relatives I know on that side of the family are long dead.

I may spend some time trying to find them, but likely that is impossible without hiring a private investigator with better search tools than I have.

Porsche-poor 01-26-2023 07:03 AM

Morning all. Off to go glue a bunch of drawings together.

GH85Carrera 01-26-2023 10:30 AM

So off to sniff some digital glue?

Porsche-poor 01-26-2023 10:31 AM

yep the ones and zeros are stinky.
