Here's what happens when a Kangaroo gets intimate with your 944

About $7K to repair. Insurance coughed up and it took about 4 months to fix it.

&%$@!! Cam gear broke off in Gainsville on the way to Dallas and the 928 GTS is a @$#&!! interference engine.

I was planning to put hotter cams in BUT not pull the engine and replace broken valves!

Yikes, David told me you had had an issue, but at that point all he knew was that the timing belt light had flashed....

So are you still stuck in Gainsville?

Bugger me Sid! Thant's a root of a job. I've re-tensioned before but this was the first belt change (had a shop do it when I purchased the car). Not looking forward to doing that again. Glad it's going to be a few years away.

I did the seals and the waterpump when I did mine. It wasn't easy, but like I said, removing the torsion bar carrier was more of a pain...

Sucks BIG time. Pretty disappointed and depressed about it. Looking at $5,000 to $10,000.

Yes I am home. Brad hand was riding with me and Matt was following in his 928. We all came home this evening in Matt's car.

Trying to decide whether to bring the car back to OKC to have it fixed by my trusty mechanic or to have a known good 928 mechanic in Dallas wrench it for me. Dallas guy just about only works on 928s and his hourly rate is cheaper. OKC mechanic has offered to go pick it up.

No it is not as bad as it gets. As bad as it gets is an automatic with Thrust Bearing Failure, requires a new short block.

The only real bummer for me is I have to pull the engine to get the heads off to have the heads done and replace any bent valves.

Doing research on cams for best bang for buck replacements.

Can't afford to do anything to the bottom end since the engine will be out anyway stuff. But it will be inspected thoroughly once out.

I'd take it to Mike, just so its closer to home....

Any guess on what caused the failure?

The timing belt had been recently properly tensioned. The belt did not actually break, and all the gears did not have any wear. None of Dallas guys could point at anything.

Mike thinks it was a defective cam shaft that just finally gave way. Dallas guys are skeptical, but still tell me that 62,000 miles is not even broke in good yet for a 928.

Damn it's cold... we had -19 in Belgium last night, ok , not here, i'm to close to the coast, but in teh Ardennes it was one of the coldest nights in many many years.
I think here we got -14 or something.. Good thing i had insulated my roof last september or i would have been shivvering all night... it was actually ok considering i did not have any heat on during the night.. It was chilly when i got up, but it's not like i had get dressed before getting out of bed kinda cold..
