That picture was taken two days ago. This is the Finke river, about 170km to the west of the Alice. It was a mild summer day at around 38degC. Everywhere in Oz can get blood hot in summer.

Happy Australia Day btw

Used to love doing flat spins with motor and rudder and zero speed. If you got enough motor you can even climb in a flat spin.
Nope, during a battle.

You can do a lot with enough motor, but it is hard to get there on the 1:1 scale planes.

Didn't find the scene I was looking for, but check out the knife edge about 4:00 in.

the knife edge is where you hope that you can out turn the other guy before he out turns you.

I remember the Dogfights Episode, Long Odds with a Dauntless in a dogfight with a A6M. He had no hope of turning with the Zero but held his own.

The knife edge in the video about had the rudder in a position to push the nose towards the ground quickly.

Where the Fokking rudder full left like he was slipping instead of doing a knife edge turn?
I do understand the Fokker has a lot of oppotise yaw in tight turns, also i don't see much rudder either.

Yep, R/C planes have a LOT of hp to weight. Especially when I built them. Reduced the weight by 25% by sanding all the wood to half the thickness then wicking ultra thin CA into the grain before I even started building. Lighter and stronger!

We had some of the world aerobatic teams come visit our flying field when competing in this area. We had a booth at their competition and did flying for crowd entertainment during their breaks. One of the US members was a popular show flyer he flew a black Pitts with 1 800 Collect on it, his name was Sean Tucker. When he visited he was very interested in one of my stunts. I did a lomsovak tumble while climbing straight up. Later I saw him do it during his air show routine and the announcer called it the Tucker Upper.

Totalled that plane when I got the bright idea to do a lomcavok 10 ft off the ground on a runway pass with not near enough airspeed. Pretty cool looking though, it looked like it just suddenly tumbled into the ground.

Leo Loudenslager took a Stevens Akro and got it down to under 900 pounds and went on to win national and world championships with it. The firs tyear he showed up he was the only monoplane and everyone laughed. He didn't win but was invited back the next year and tromped everyone. The stopped laughing and moved on to monoplanes and the Extra was developed out of that on a different thread than his Laser 200. Leo used to do a Lomcovák at the top of his loop. He would also do an eight point loop while knife edge.

I bring that up because Sean D Tucker has stuck with bi-planes. Modified Christen Eagles to his current Challenger. He makes a very energetic show. He took up aerobatics to overcome his fear of heights. Been watching him since his early days of 1-800 COLLECT. Sharp looking plane.

Wayne Handly could climb straight up, pause and hang from the prop then climb again in his Turbo Raven. The only full scale plane I have ever seen do that.

The Edge was built in Guthrie OK just north of here.

It was fun attending the WAC when it was here. The Aussie team was a hilarious group of guys!
One of our pattern guys flew his Extra 300 thru their routines before they started competition. The were all impressed, the judges said he would have gotten a higher score than they did. After the competition he flew their patterns while barrell rolling the entired time from take off to landing. Think he was a RC pattern champ a couple of years too. His name was Sean McMurtry.

A little after I stopped flying they started calling the high power to weight ratio stuff 3D Aerobatics.

He must have some awesome coordination. It is more difficult to do those things in an RC than a real one, coordination wise. Of course, it is also a lot cheaper.

And ya don't die when ya screw up the stunt in a RC model.

The folks that built the Edge up in Guthrie used to be in the local Porsche club. Nice folks.

Isn't Zivco the company working with Leo on the Shark before his motorcycle accident?
