Just playing around we flew my house with the drone. It is just crazy the detail we can see with an 1/2 inch pixel. We loaded it into the 3D program and it is like looking at a toy model of my house. If you have ever played with a viewmaster 3D viewer of seen the cool IMAX 3D movies that are super sharp it is like that on nothing is video, just a fixed image. I can measure every point of the house and yard. We can measure the height and location of any point. The crown of the road in front of the house is very evident and you can even see the slight indentation of where the cars have depressed the asphalt. It is just way cool. Now we just need to figure out a real market for it.

Just a couple of ideas, don't really know if your regular aerial photography is enough resolution or drone shots would be necessary.

Show the streets in a neighborhood and with a report on the percentage of pot holes. They could then turn it in to the city to get their neighborhood scheduled for resurfacing. Now the neighborhood association sends in a petition.

Or maybe put together a proposal to do all the main streets in the city and produce pot hole reports for the city.

Or maybe do evaluations for insurance companies to determine if a roof needs to be replaced instead of sending a guy out to climb on the roof?

All of that is possible, but a UAV or drone flight on my house had 38 images on the nadir (vertical) and if we expanded it to just my tiny neighborhood it would be hundreds of images. The flight time gets really long approaching the limits of one battery. Swapping in a second battery is easy but takes time. In the end the cost is just way too high to go out on just speculative flying. We would spend thousands and maybe just maybe get someone to buy some small part of it.

If we want to fly our neighborhood we could almost do it faster and cheaper from the airplane. If the area is in Tulsa or Ardmore we can get bot of those with ease from the airplane but it would take two days with a UAV. Unless you get to the level of UAV Seahawk sells. Those are not a hobbyist level and are some real money.

With the data I have I could make a 3D model with a 3D printer. Again, so what. Who is going to buy a model of their house or building?

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Morning all
ANZAC Day today

Think I'll go get a photo of the sunrise.

Happy ANZAC day to you and AZZY, even if she has forsaken us.

Yea, there are dozens of people starting businesses that use a drone. They can click a few buttons and make Pix4D produce amazing results. They have zero idea how to verify the data is positionally correct and they usually don't care. If all you want to see is the roof or look for damage the exact position does not matter.

A lot of it comes down to how much would you want to get paid to purchase a drone, learn to run it properly, and get in your car to drive across town to get to the site, launch the drone and fly the project. If you spend 45 minutes each way in the car, an hour to set up the UAV and get the flight done what is that worth to you? Some places want to pay just $150 per site. Unless you can do 8 or 10 per day you will starve.

Since we come from a background of aerial mapping we are stuck on accuracy. You simply have to have a ground control point, well actually several of them on any project. We have done real photogrammetry for decades. It is a real science. It used to be very expensive. It is not that expensive anymore.

Bet if you made a drone jammer that made a nearby drone either crash or go back to where it was launched you could sell a lot of them to people that think it is a privacy issue to have one fly over their property.

Not as much fun as shooting them down though.

Hoping I get my eyesight back good enough I can fix my r/c helis one of these days.

Stijn!!

Right now drones or UAVs are considered aircraft and the FAA figures they are just like an airplane. Not good to make airplanes crash. The Feds get upset. And a jammer would need a transmitter, that is gonna make the FCC mad and they send another agency, the FBI to investigate.

If I could see good enough to repair my heli's they wouldn't last very long 'til I get depth perception back.

One of them the only thing wrong is the battery holder broke. Problem is I have to replace the frame to fix it and the fact that all the parts are teeny tiny.

Well, we are making progress. The sole of Mrs Carrera's shoe came off so she can say for sure she put her sole into the job.

We had a false start on Sunday. The wall was started but it was nothing close to level. She did some more reading and finally believed me that she needed to start over. Yesterday morning she took everything down that we had started and began again. This time she did it the way I had suggested, but the internet said it was the way to build a wall on a slope. This is worse that doing wallpaper together.

In the top photo it looks like the wall curves back up, but that is an optical delusion. The driveway slopes down and according to the level that wall is level.

There is a one foot drop going down the driveway and the two foot drop going across the yard to the driveway.

One thing for sure is our project is going to end the dry days. There is a good chance of rain starting this afternoon and going on almost all week. It would be great to have dry conditions but it ain't gonna happen. Today is a high of 88 tomorrow the high is 55.

Wake UP!

Was going to attack the proliferation of monkey grass in my front garden with some Roundup. Decided to wait until the wet season is over. If it gets wet or rains before that stuff has a chance to degrade it kills more than just the things it hits the greenery of.

I like working. I create and design things to be made. I'm just not in a great mood right now.

I enjoy my job too, but the ONLY reason I come to work is because they pay me. I like to eat and buy toys and go on vacations.

I am working on a fun and challenging job right now. A customer has a section of land along the river. The river has moved about a mile and into a different county. It is a challenge to geo-reference our old 1951 image to a 2105 image. I have to get them so they are aligned and in the exact position in relation to the earth. The 2015 is easy but virtually everything on the ground is different after 64 years.

We have all changed a lot in those 64 years.

The job is fine. It's just some of the coworkers I seem to have a problem with.

Also got 4 spam in my quarantine today that were for Toe Fungus cures.
NEVER looked up, googled, or mentioned toe fungus to anyone!
Do my feet really stink that bad?
