eh... the chances of this happening in our lifetime is extremely remote. Yeah, eventually it WILL happen, BUT... by then, the human race will probably have screwed things up so much that no one will be around to witness it anyway.

Apophis is "only" 1500 ft. across. It can cause a lot of damage for sure. But it's not gonna make us extinct.

Geeeeeeeeeeeees,,,I thought everyone knew what they are. They're one of those things, you know, that's out there, and does that gravity thing when, it's, um, close to something that moves in one direction or another. Clear enuff for ya now???

Whether it is a supervolcano or an asteroid, I do not waste my time worrying about such things.

Some of the largest fossilized sea turtles are found in Kansas. There is no ocean in Kansas, right? Like every other species, we are just visitors here. Enjoy it while you can.

There are fossils of a Dire Wolf in the natural history museum in Norman. Imagine a wolf that stood 6 feet at the shoulder. I am real glad those suckers are extinct.

And they tell us we need to give them total control over our lives and the economy in order to save the polar bears. 99.9999% of humans will never come close to seeing a polar bear. How did more species go extinct than are alive today and the Earth still manage to survive?

True. I read a book recently, "a brief history of everything", I think that was the title. If this Yellowstone thing interests you, you'd love this book.

Anyway....There's a chapter on fossils and how rare they are. Chances are if all 6 billion+ humans died today, only about half a human skelton would last to make a fossil. So your right, in a million years, virtually nothing will be left.

Hey, if this happens while Obama is president, do you think he'll try to blame it on Bush?

Why wouldn't he? Bush caused the SE Asian tsunami in 2004 and Katrina too.

Why would anyone worry about that?

Scientists are stuck between a rock and a hard place these days with the internet. They used to keep information about things like potential near impacts silent until the orbital mechanics were tightly established, sometimes taking years of data collection. You never heard about such thing 10, 20 years ago, because the astronomers didn't rush out and make rash and false press statements. A case like Apophis would never have even been known by 99.999% of the population because they would not have discussed it until the orbit was determined properly. however, someone finds a circular sent out on the first day, or trolls the MPC data site and sees a new asteroid being tracked, and all hell breaks loose.
