I said something stupid to a neighbor today.
Ever have one of those moments?
The retired couple behind us have been good neighbors. Art and Nancy both retired from GM some years ago. Art was diagnosed with liver cancer this summerand has been in and out of the hospital. Today, I was out in the back with the kids and Nancy came out to walk their dog. Me: "Hi Nancy. How is Art doing?" Nancy: "He's dead". "He died December 3." Man, did I ever feel stupid. I offered my condolences and told her to call if she needs anything. My wife then talked to a couple of other neighbors who had no idea either that he had passed. Apparently, he had strict instructions that no one outside his immediate family were to do anything at the time. No funeral, no anouncement, no nothin'. RIP Art.

That wasn't saying something stupid, that was being unaware of a bizarre situation.

I was all ready to come up with a "here's your sign" wise crack, but your situation was awkward not stupid. Sorry to hear about your neighbor.

What could she expect, she had to know this would come up. I doubt she feels like you said anything wrong.

Got a holiday card from an ex yesterday. She's getting mRried next year. Called today to congratulate her. She asked how my dad was doing. Occured to me that she was not at the funeral. Told her that he died 3 years ago. She had still been snding him birthday and Christmas cards and wondered why his had stopped.

You didn't do anything wrong, Wayne. Art's wishes were that his passing was kept quiet and it was.
All of us have the excruciating social pain of blundering into this at one time or another... I was driving the spyder in our local cruise and spotted a former co-worker in the crowd. I knew her husband, Ken, would just LOVE to go around the block a few times in the spyder. So I hollered out for her and asked where Ken was at... He had died a few months before... Makes you feel like a real heel when this happens, but you live through it. Now go do something nice for the widow. angela

Too big to fail

I did one like that just a couple days ago. There's an old guy "Red" (bald as a cue ball) who collects all the recyclables in the office. I'll run into him once or twice a day and say "hi"; he helps me out every now and then when I need boxes. Anyway, I saw him on Friday morning and I said "Hey Red, how ya doin'? Haven't seen ya for a few days." (Harmless enough, right?) He sez "My wife passed, had to cremate her and take her ashes to the ocean" I was pretty much at a lost for words at that point.

We found out our 94 year old neighbor across the street died recently. His wife is still living there by herself now and she's actually a few months older than he was.
We didn't even know he had been in care due to illness. I feel like such a crappy neighbor and person. I go to work in the morning and I figure if they have put their flag up then everything is okay. I know Harold put the flag up every day. I come to find out that Mary Anne's been doing it now so everything looked normal to me. Our neighbors on both sides of them do a very good job of watching over them (now just her); I will have to try a little harder I think. Harold asked for the same thing though, no fan fare, no ceremony - nothing.

My grandpa didn't want his death kept secret like that but he didn't want a big deal made out of it... There are still times when ppl find out who my grandfather was they ask me how he is doing.... I have to inform them that he passed away... In 1994....

Thanks for the support.
We spoke to other folks in the neighborhood and nobody knew so I don't feel so bad anymore. We can laugh now as the way his wife put it was so dead(sorry)pan and matter-of-fact it caught meoff guard as to maybe she was joking. Guess not. I know that he lived a full life and visited every state in the union over the years. They went to Alaska a couple of years ago in a motorhome. He said the last time he was there was on his way to Vietnam and they didn't let him enjoy the sights.
