I've got a samsung DLP as well - had it for more than 3 years now. Works great, not as thin as what's out now but still a damn nice TV.

Beg to differ. DirecTV broadcasts about 100 stations in 1080p. When I switch from a 720 broadcast to a 1080p signal the difference is impressive. I had some friends over for the Pacquiao-Cotto fight. When we switched from a 720 program to the fight in 1080p everyone commented at once. It was a dramatic difference.

We just brought a 54" Plasma by Panasonic to replace our 50" Plasma by NEC. The kids are the envy of all the kids in the neighborhood because they got a 50" TV to play XBOX on.

Yep. Same here. I love DirecTV!

Like I said, the satellite guys are the only ones broadcasting 1080p and it's still limited content, VOD and PPV events.

Direct TV boasts 130+ HD Channels. Since HD encompasses 720p, 1080i and 1080p you can't assume they are all 1080p broadcasts.

If they are really up to 100 1080p channels I might have to set my dish up again but I suspect it's not the case. 100 1080p broadcasts would be very newsworthy.

DTV's 1080p is also 24 not 60 so still not the same data rate as Blue Ray.

VOD is not a broadcast, it's a data stream that comes down to your receiver over your wifi.

And the diff between 720p and 1080i is negligible.

I was ready to post an Anti-DirecTV rant thread here the other day.

I was all set to sign up with them last thursday. First they transferred my call SIX TIMES...AND hung up on me before i ever got to talk to a salesperson, then the salesperson used highly deceitful sales tactics with me after i called back and finally got in touch with someone in sales.

This chick waits til the end of a 20 minute phone call, when i think i'm all signed up and ready to go, after she tells me my credit rating qualifies me for their best deals......to tell me that they need a one time $220.00 up front fee.

I simply told her to go F herself and hung up.

I hate dishonest people.

After that i called Dish Network and had it installed in less than 24 hours, with an up front cost of $0. DirecTV are thieving swine, they can go F themselves.

Direct TV has been having soom BIG customer service issues.

You should have heard this State's AG rip them on the news the other day. --some really bad customer service/ business practices.

To U.

Some people are sensitive to flicker/jutter. Apparently you are not.

To date the best TV picture i have ever seen is my dad's big ass DLP projection with a hi-def feed(not sure what the rating of the feed was).

Makes my LCD look really bad in comparison. In fact it makes everything but top end Plasma look bad in comparison. Fortunately for me, i do not watch my LCD TV with his big DLP TV sitting right next to mine, taunting me.

I agree with you.

May have to clarify my position. What I meant was people assume that 1080i is a better picture than 720p. That's not necessarily true. Most noticeable is the flicker.

As someone else mentioned earlier, at 50 in and below there is no benefit to 1080i as 720p will provide all the info needed. Above 50 and things start to change.

Given the choice to watch a sporting event in 720p v 1080i I'll take 720p. There's a reason that Monday night football, FOX and ESPN broadcast 720p and not 1080i.

Snipe, you've got to see 120 or 240hz with 10-bit color. Tho' some complain that the picture loses it's 'movieness' ...it's like you're on a movie set. It's kind of weird.

sm, I also prefer 720p to 1080i for anything in motion. Bluray, is of course 1080p; and like I said above, really pops with an interpolated freq that is an even multiple of film's 24fps.

...and color depth helps; often more that pixel count.

Yep ruf-porsche, my Panasonic is a 1080p model (50 inch V10 Series). The picture is kick ass.

It replaced an older Sony Wega that I have had for about 9 years.

I'll stick with my CRT and true uncompressed 1080i antenna feed. Also, no one can steal it when I'm not at home, unlike your lightweight toys

I picked up a large (50"-ish) Panasonic Viera 720p plasma for my inlaws a few months ago, I think it was under $900. 1080i LCD would have been nearly $400 more. They don't have BluRay and don't have digital cable, they just wanted a big and thin TV. To them it looks great. Most people will never notice the difference between HD resolution or TV types.
