I started out in march at 220 and am now down to 190 because i cut out late night eating and useless snacking at work. My pants don't fit anymore though.

I'm at 180#'s today!

I'm thinking about starting a daily 3 mile bike ride and staying at this weight.
I feel great and younger, too!!

I'm at 180 down from approx. 200, cut out soda and most treats and cycling 20 - 40+ miles a day, 6 days a week. Sunday is my day of rest, actually I'm on call Sunday so can't be away from the area.

I have been struggling loosing weight no matter how well I eat or how much I work out soooo....

I had my blood tested and my digestive system and blood - oxygen levels are all screwed up.

My red cells are all bunched together so that I am not getting enough oxygen through my lungs and that is why I am so tired all the time. And also part of the reason that I don't sleep well coming off my night shifts. They say it also is the reason that I am constantly sore when I wake up or immediately after exercise.

My body is not processing protein correctly so my sugar levels are all jacked (can't loose weight) and it is causing digestive issues in my stomach (not breaking down food correctly) which causes micro tears in the lining and has allowed parasites into my blood (more than likely from swallowing lake water while water skiing). My alkaline levels are also jacked.

I am not processing sugar correctly, so things like fruit and any alcohol are out for 2-3 weeks on fruit and a couple months on alcohol. Anything that I can't break down correctly are out like peanuts, dairy foods, anything with MSG, anything heavy in sugar like sport drinks, fruit etc.

I am taking 6 different pills for a month (all natural) to try and cleanse my system and get my blood cells to break loose and be on their own.

Nice huh!!!

I will kick this things A$$

OK Gents... I've got problems.

Back early in the year I did really well and was down to 170.

Now that I've moved and got settled in my new job, things have changed. I thought they were changing for the better. I now get 7 hours of sleep a night as opposed to my old days of 3-4 hours, if I was lucky. I never eat fast food- always nice restaurants and home cooked stuff. Two square meals a day, no junk food. I also have cut down from the college level absurd amounts of beer drinking to much more conservative levels.

Unfortunately, I weighed myself today and I was a paultry 190. Yep. 20 lbs I've packed on, all in about 2 months.

I'm giving myself exactly 2 months to lose it again.

How did this happen?

I used to never have time for a lunch, so I regularly went with only 1 meal a day, fast food, at night usually. Now I go out to eat with coworkers every day. and eat a big meal at home as I have time to cook now.

I also sit at a desk all day instead of running around a shop floor, on my feet, working on cars.

I also have taken to eating lots of pasta. Dunno why.

So my plan of action is to cut all the carbs. and calories.

Nothing but water and small rations until I'm down to 170 again.

I had a coworker just cut 20 lbs in 2 weeks. He went from 230 to 210.

I start right now.

Schumi,

I think your analysis is pretty close to the mark. The stress of the new job and move could contribute as well.
here are a couple of observations:
1) eating a "nice" lunch out, doesn't mean you are eating less calories and fat. It could be the opposite.
2) 2 meals a day is a definite no-no!
3) The pasta may be a reaction to stress, soothing comfort food si something we often react to
4) You have reduced your calorie burn by a significant amount by moving to a desk job

I have a couple of suggestions that worked for me in a similar situation:
1) Lunch. if you can pack a lunch, then you have control of your calories. If you want to go out, choose something like a cobb or nicoise salad, chicken or fish and salad or veg. NO DESERT. if you need carbs at lunch make sure they are complex (whole grain). white sugar & white flour = white death.

2) 5 small meals a day is better. Never skip breakfast, you'll over eat at lunch. Complex carbs in the morning, transitioning to protien and veg in the evening.
What does this mean?
sample menu:
oatmeal (complex carb!), fruit, yoghurt for breakfast. make a coffee if you must with half coffee and half atkins chocolate protien shake. Delicious!
Snack. youghurt or fruit or a no sugar outmeal bar.
Lunch. a perfect lunch would be tuna on whole wheat, an apple, and a small milk. change it up all you want but think protein, carb, fruit or veg. This is the transition meal.
snack. Protein bar or cheese &apple, or youghurt, or skip it if you are not hungry
dinner. fish, chicken, steak, chops, what ever protien you crave, but skip the carbs and eat salad, veg, coleslaw etc. instead.

This is well researched and has worked for me very well. Also get some exercise in to replace running around the shop floor (volunteer at a food bank, if you hate the gym, or wokr on a buddies car). If you must have pasta use whole grain, or check out the Dreamfields brand, which has very low net carbs.

Doing this I have dropped from close to 200 to a low of 165. I am back to 175, but it is 10 lbs of mucsle not fat. Most importantly my body fat dropped from 28% to 15%. I turned 50 last weekend (at the track of course!), and feel great.
One more thing, and it is a hard one. Loose the beer altogether until you are seriuosly dropping weight. Alcohol burns (like sugar) "off the top". Picture your belly fat as a tank of POTENTIAL fuel. If you are pouring quickstart down the carb, it is way easier to burn the alcohol (or sugar) for energy, then to convert the fat to fuel.
Another thing a track buddy suggested was setting a redline. His logic is that he never exceeds the redline on his car, so why would he risk his own body. So if your ideal weight was 180 (comfortable running speed), set a redline at 185. It is ocasionally OK to hit the redline (Christmas?), but never exceed it.
You really don't want to blow a (heart) valve!

Just a note, "nice restaurant food" is not necessarily healthy. In general, restaurants want the food to taste good, more than they want it to be good for you. A large amount of butter, other fat, and salt is typically used.

George,
Any chance of doing this for 2011? I missed last year but need motivation badly.
Thanks,
Steve

I am in for 2011 as well. I have been able to keep the weight off that I lost, but I have not made it to my goal either.

If nobody else steps up to run it then I will do so.

OK here's update since April. Hitting the gym harder these days and I got a new addiction - sit ups and crunches...300+ a day. I also worked in running 2.5 miles 2x week with my 13yr Son and cycling 20 miles 1x a week. My goal is a 6:20 mile by March 2011. My only day off from exercise is Wednesday. I am still 195 lbs...but my waist is a solid 34 and I have easily doubled the weights I was working with in the past. I turned 48 on Nov 7 but I feel great...except for my lousy left shoulder.

Last week the wife and I were talking and I was in my underwear...and for the first time in many years my wife commented that I looked pretty studly...haha. I'm doing something right!

Screw the doctor's weight/height charts...

I didn't follow the rules by posting at the start of the year, but the end of the year is nearly here so I wanted to chime in with my results.

Around April I weighed in at 260 when I went for my physical.
It's the heaviest I have ever been. I was unhappy and so was the doctor.

Over the course of the year, I have tried a couple of different diets. First was a low calorie diet. It worked well for a while, but then I hit a plateau at about 225.

In August, my wife and I started going to the gym.

On the first of Dec, my wife started working with a trainer since she was about 50 lb over her target weight and was having difficulty dropping any weight. He put her (and me by proxie) on a low fat, no sodium, high protein diet that the gym promotes. I am eating about twice the volume of food compared to the calorie restricted diet, but I have lost another 6 pounds in the last 20 days.

Currently at 219.

I am definitely in, been cleaning out the frig and freezer, i know what i got to do. on the office scale today, dressed in office attire, i am at 258 lbs, with cellphone, shoes and wallet.

the door of frig is filled with fat poisons.

I was in this 2 years ago, and wnet sown near 220. this year, I ate a lot of buffets during the summer and did not really exercise. many bad choices. I intend to make an example of myself.

Going to spend about 150.00 on new tennis shoes(love to walk) and workout shorts. The gym may be too crowded(always is for about 3 months after new years, but I can walk miles with some music), but i may do it in the early am (530) so the hard part of the day is done.

good luck to you all!

Harvey,

Congrats! Am two pounds behind you at 221 and started at 258 six months ago.

Sure is nice having clothes start to fall off of you and being able to wear things you have not fit in in years...

All,

We are having another challenge in 2011. JYL and I will co-run it. Will be very similar to last year.

Look for the post after Christmas!

George
