Who was that? I think they meant to laugh at Kandinsky.

I was kidding, Duckie... I'm fully supportive of Ian's burst of laughter at seeing a Miro for the first time.

Now getting back to my point, I would suggest that some of the people posting in this thread should buy a book that explains some of the art in the world. Note that this book would be nothing like Rape of the Masters and would not concern itself with the art market whatsoever. Clear enough? JR PS; Maybe, just maybe, the world doesn't actually revolve around you and I was really speaking to someone else. After all, it appears that you might read books... |

I feel no shame whatsoever. The next day, we spent hours ADMIRING the wonderful art of El Greco, Velázquez & Goya et al in the Prado. And the Thyssen's chronological layout was a big treat too although we were 'arted out' by the time we got to the impressionists. Real art imho.

2. And, as perhaps pointed out in this thread, appearances can be deceiving. As far as those asking me to post pics of my own art, why should I? That would contribute absolutely nothing to this thread. And besides, this is the internet! I can be anything I say I am! Maybe I'm not even an artist at all! Hell, for all that anyone but a few here know, I could be a freakin' repo man!

I suggest that it is you sir, who clearly does not get it at all. If you have to be told how to 'understand' art, you have failed miserably IMO. |

I "get" art. I have been drawing and painting my whole life. I even made a (somewhat pitiful) living as an artist in the late 80's, for a time. That was my day job, all day, every day. I was merely trying to point out that there are both conscious and somewhat subconcious or "gut" reactions to the art we see. If you have an understanding of what it takes to make a painting, the techniques, materials, color theory, composition and all of the other little details, you can perhaps better appreciate some of the art we have been discussing. I don't care about the art market, politics, religion, popular culture, academicians, art critics, the circumstances of the artist's life, or anything other than the work. I view it, in person, without the little audio tour that might tell me something about it. My sole interaction is with the work itself. And, for those paintings that I like, it is not uncommon for me to spend literally hours contemplating them. Some, I have visited many times.... JR |

first, rape of the masters has nothing to do with the art market. it is simply a collection of deconstruction, post structuralist, radical feminist essays reprinted with pictures of the paintings being analyzed. they are beyond parody. i read it all in school. greenberg, foucault, derrida, demann. the whole field depends on ignoring one very important point. if a work of art has to be explained to be appreciated, then it has failed. the modern abstract movement has taken it further. deliberately being incomprehensible. turning art nto a circle jerk for themselves and the critics. the next wave, is to deny the importance of "meaning" in art at all. this took hold some time in the 80s. it was being called post-post-modernism when i stopped paying attention. and the world does too revolve around me.

I believe that "educating yourself to understand art," is a silly notion. |

I know the Rape of the Masters book has nothing to do with the art market, per se. That's why I added the bit about the art market. I wanted to make it clear that I wasn't talking about either of those facets of the subject of art appreciation. To spell it out, I was suggesting that certain people, obviously not the annointed, might be served by learning a little bit more about art. It's a big field and I know from experience you can't learn it all in a day. Not even two, or three. Might take all week.... It's like good wine. The more you drink, the more you learn (hopefully) and the more knowledgeable you become about what you like, and why... JR Last edited by javadog; 01-27-2010 at 08:49 AM.. |

Yeah, I know. But if I were to view the same work as you, at the same time, I might be able to point out a few things that could, just possibly, alter the opinion or feeling that you might have about that particular piece, at that time.
Or, maybe you would require the use of a two-by-four, like the family mule. Dunno. ![]() JR |

By the way, if any of you do wish to read a book with big words, about art, I suggest Pictures of Nothing, by Varnedoe.
Riveting stuff. JR |
