The edelbrock 4bbl carburetor is one of the most convenient, inexpensive, and simplest hot rodding implements in the history of mankind.

The Edelbrock carb is the same basic design as the Carter AFB (aluminum Four Barrel)
Most today seem to go for the Holley double pumper... When the AFB first arrived on the scene, some said it stood for "Awful Freakin' Big"...

Yep, Carter AFB. I find that most prefer the Edelbrock unless they want to maximize HP and race the car. Holleys give more peak power, but they are a lot more finicky as well.
An edelbrock you drop on, calibrate, and then ignore for the entire rest of the life of the car, lol. |

Pretty much...my old Dodge pickemup is running a small AFB atop a edelbrock "performer" manifold...mild rebuild with a Comp cams RV cam, designed for a flat torque curve because it's a 4X4...peaky cams not good on 4X4's.

If you can come up with a cheaper way to double the HP on my FJ80, I'm all ears. Even a decent Toyota V8 from a Tundra is $1500+. Nicer motor but it has less power, less aftermarket, and doesn't have adapters and motor mounts available off of the shelf.

Really!
I've been in a Jag XJ6 that had a SBC, I've also owned a stock XJ6. This may be part of the problem. If you haven't had the pleasure of owning a nice running air cooled flat six, you could be lured to the other side of darkness. Now, putting a Sube in a 914 doesn't bother me in the least. In fact, I had visions of putting a Cadillac sidewinder in a 914. I'll say this, that would lay rubber from here to the state line. |

I have one. A 350- 300 hp SBC 914. Where I live there are a lot more straight roads than twisty ones. Fun car to drive. Power to weight ratio is better than a Viper at a 100K less in cost to buy.
The heavier springs in the back take the fun out of driving it on twisty roads. My 70 914 1.7 car is a lot more fun on twisty roads even with the difference in horsepower because it has a more responsive suspension. After driving the 69 911 E for the last two summers, both I and my dog prefer the 914 for riding in, but I like the flat 6 sound. So next is a Porsche 6 transplant into 72 914 I have sitting around.

Somehow I don't see that having the low-end torque for a 6000 lb AWD SUV.
